Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)
Overview

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to help patients regain movement and manage pain following injuries, surgeries, or chronic health conditions. PTAs play a key role in implementing therapeutic treatment plans and supporting patients throughout their rehabilitation journey.

Key Responsibilities
  • Treatment Implementation:

    • Administer physical therapy treatments and exercises as prescribed by the Physical Therapist.

    • Assist patients in performing therapeutic activities (e.g., gait training, stretching, strengthening exercises).

    • Operate and monitor equipment like ultrasound machines, electrical stimulation devices, and hot/cold therapy tools.

  • Patient Monitoring:

    • Observe and report patient responses to treatments.

    • Record progress and communicate any concerns or changes in condition to the supervising Physical Therapist.

    • Modify treatment approaches as instructed to enhance patient outcomes.

  • Patient Education & Support:

    • Educate patients and their families on exercises and activities to do at home.

    • Provide motivation and encouragement during therapy sessions.

    • Ensure patient comfort, safety, and compliance with therapeutic protocols.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient treatments.

    • Assist with scheduling and preparing therapy spaces and equipment.

    • Comply with facility policies and professional/legal standards.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    • Associate’s degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.

  • Licensure/Certification:

    • State licensure or certification (varies by state).

    • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

  • Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

    • Attention to detail and ability to follow clinical instructions precisely.

    • Physical stamina and the ability to assist patients with mobility challenges.

  • May involve:

    • Prolonged standing or walking

    • Lifting or supporting patients during transfers and exercises
