Job Description
The Environmental Health and Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting environmental, health, and safety programs at our facility. This position works closely with employees, supervisors, and management to help maintain a safe workplace, identify and correct hazards, support regulatory compliance, and promote a positive safety culture. The Environmental Health and Safety Engineer I assists with inspections, employee training, incident investigations, environmental reporting, recordkeeping, and continuous improvement initiatives in an active industrial environment.
Duties/Responsibilities- Conduct routine environmental and workplace safety inspections of production, warehouse, storage, and outdoor work areas.
- Identify safety hazards, environmental concerns, and areas of noncompliance and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Assist with monitoring compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, state Department of Environmental Protection, and other regulatory requirements.
- Support environmental programs involving waste management, recycling, stormwater, spill prevention, pollution prevention, and environmental permits.
- Assist with workplace incident, injury, property damage, near-miss, spill, and environmental incident investigations.
- Help identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
- Track corrective actions and follow up with responsible employees or departments to ensure completion.
- Support hazard assessments, job safety analyses, and the development of safe work procedures.
- Monitor employee compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and required personal protective equipment.
- Assist with safety programs involving lockout/tagout, hazard communication, powered industrial trucks, machine guarding, emergency response, and other workplace hazards.
- Develop, update, and deliver employee safety and environmental training.
- Assist with new-hire safety orientation and ongoing employee training.
- Maintain training records, inspection forms, certifications, permits, incident records, and other EHS documentation.
- Assist with OSHA recordkeeping and the preparation of environmental and safety reports.
- Collect and analyze EHS data, including incidents, inspections, training completion, and corrective actions.
- Prepare reports, presentations, safety communications, toolbox talks, and internal performance metrics.
- Support emergency preparedness activities, drills, inspections, and response procedures.
- Work with supervisors and employees to address unsafe conditions, unsafe work practices, and recurring compliance concerns.
- Research environmental and safety requirements related to new equipment, processes, materials, and operational changes.
- Participate in continuous improvement, sustainability, and employee safety initiatives.
- Promote a positive, prevention-focused safety culture throughout the organization.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Strong knowledge of or ability to learn workplace safety and environmental compliance requirements.
- Ability to identify workplace hazards and recommend practical corrective actions.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and recordkeeping abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to develop and present safety and environmental training to employees.
- Ability to communicate professionally with employees, supervisors, management, regulatory agencies, and outside vendors.
- Ability to interpret regulations, policies, procedures, technical information, and permit requirements.
- Ability to collect, organize, analyze, and present EHS data.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet required deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Willingness to regularly work in an active industrial environment.
- Commitment to workplace safety, environmental responsibility, and continuous improvement.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Safety Sciences, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field required.
- One to three years of related environmental, health, or safety experience preferred.
- Relevant internship, co-op, or academic project experience may be considered.
- Experience in manufacturing, recycling, metals, construction, utilities, warehousing, or another industrial environment preferred.
- Familiarity with OSHA requirements and environmental compliance programs preferred.
- Experience conducting workplace inspections, safety training, incident investigations, or regulatory recordkeeping is a plus.
- Familiarity with waste management, stormwater, spill prevention, emergency response, workers' compensation, or environmental permitting is helpful.
- Relevant certifications or progress toward certifications such as GSP, ASP, CSP, or OSHA training credentials preferred but not required.
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, climb stairs, and navigate production and outdoor work areas.
- Ability to perform inspections in warehouse, processing, storage, and industrial work environments.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds as needed.
- Ability to safely work around heavy equipment, machinery, forklifts, moving materials, and vehicle traffic.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures, weather conditions, dust, noise, and other conditions common to industrial operations.
- Ability to respond to workplace incidents, spills, or environmental concerns as needed.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment and comply with all company safety requirements.
- Pay: From $50,000.00 per year
- Location: Regional facility (commute required)
