Sign Language Interpreter in Portsmouth, VA

Passionate about supporting students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing? A contract opportunity is available for skilled Sign Language Interpreters to provide in-person services in schools in the Virginia Beach area. This is a full-time assignment covering 35 hours per week from August 24, 2026, through June 11, 2027. You’ll play an essential role by facilitating communication in classroom settings, during school meetings, and at student activities.

Key Qualifications:

• Valid VA Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification required
• Minimum EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score of 3.5
• Experience interpreting in educational environments preferred
• Confidence interpreting in group settings as well as one-on-one
• Commitment to on-site work; virtual or hybrid options are not permitted
• Comfortable supporting a varied caseload and adapting to schedule changes for extracurricular events

Responsibilities:

• Provide sign language interpretation between students, staff, and families during the school day
• Assist with classroom learning and teacher-led activities for students across age groups
• Deliver interpreting services at meetings involving deaf or hard-of-hearing parents/guardians
• Support student access to after-school clubs and extracurricular activities, occasionally outside standard hours
• Collaborate professionally with educators and other interpreters to enhance student experience
• Maintain accurate, confidential records and adhere to ethical standards
