Job Description
Description:

Service Electrician

Ostrom Electrical Plumbing Heating & Air — Roanoke, VA

Ostrom is seeking an experienced Service Electrician to run maintenance and service calls scheduled by Dispatch. This is a service role, not new construction — you'll diagnose and repair electrical systems in occupied homes, help homeowners understand their options, and work independently on a truck from day one.

Helping people is our core value. Sales is part of the job, but it isn't the frame — our best technicians are the ones customers trust because they explain what they found honestly and let the homeowner decide what's right for them.

Our team works together. Technicians tag-team difficult jobs, step in when an apprentice hits a problem in the field, and share what they know. We're always training, both technically and on the customer side. We're looking for someone who wants to keep developing and to help others do the same.

Key Responsibilities
  • Run maintenance and service calls as directed by Dispatch, arriving on time to the first call each day and communicating accurate ETAs for the rest of the day
  • Use the expectation card upon arrival to inform the customer what they can expect during the call
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot residential electrical systems, performing a thorough inspection on every call and following the evaluation checklist
  • Provide customers with ABC options based on their wants and needs, explaining findings clearly and without jargon
  • Present information and pricing on service agreements, accessories, and other improvements
  • Perform panel upgrades, service changes, rewires, device replacements, lighting, and other residential electrical work
  • Perform generator diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, and full generator installations to manufacturer and company standards
  • Perform commercial electrical service and installation work as assigned
  • Mentor and develop apprentices in the field, sharing both technical knowledge and customer-service approach
  • Support other technicians on difficult technical or customer situations
  • Debrief with Dispatch upon completion of each call, communicate parts used, and follow the PO process for non-truck-stock parts
  • Ensure the customer's home is protected and left in the same or better condition
  • Keep the vehicle stocked, accurately inventoried, clean, and in safe working order; pass quarterly vehicle inspection
  • Return defective warranty parts and unused inventory to the branch
  • Accurately complete all required documentation, checklists, hours, and materials records
  • Maintain a professional appearance in company-approved uniform at all times
  • Participate in company training and follow all safety policies and procedures
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on residential electrical service experience
  • Virginia Journeyman Electrician license, or licensure in another state with eligibility for Virginia reciprocity
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot independently in occupied homes
  • Experience helping homeowners understand their options and choose what's right for them
  • Genuine interest in developing apprentices and helping teammates succeed
  • Generator service or installation experience preferred
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to lift 50 or more pounds
  • Ability to use a tablet and smartphone and follow GPS
  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving record
  • Neat, clean, professional appearance and excellent interpersonal communication skills, with a desire to exceed client expectations and function in a team environment
  • Participation in an on-call rotation as scheduled
  • Must be 18 years of age or older to apply

What We Offer
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Company vehicle
  • Tool allowance
  • Uniforms provided
  • Ongoing technical and customer-service training
  • Clear path for advancement in a growing electrical department
