This is a hands-on position focused primarily on keeping our refrigeration system operating safely, reliably, and efficiently. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, monitoring an industrial ammonia system, troubleshooting problems, performing routine maintenance and smaller repairs, and identifying larger issues before they result in downtime.
This is a good opportunity for an experienced refrigeration operator who wants a stable, full-time position with a generally predictable weekday schedule.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and operate the facility’s industrial ammonia refrigeration system
- Perform daily inspections and record operating conditions, pressures, temperatures, oil levels, and other important system readings
- Keep refrigeration equipment operating safely and efficiently
- Troubleshoot refrigeration problems and determine the cause of alarms, abnormal pressures, temperatures, or operating conditions
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor mechanical repairs
- Inspect and maintain compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, valves, controls, and related refrigeration equipment
- Identify developing equipment problems before they cause failures or production downtime
- Assist with defrosting, system adjustments, oil management, and other normal refrigeration-system operations
- Respond to refrigeration alarms and equipment problems when required
- Coordinate with outside refrigeration contractors when repairs or specialized service are beyond the scope of normal in-house maintenance
- Maintain refrigeration logs and maintenance records
- Maintain a clean and organized mechanical/refrigeration room
- Follow facility safety procedures and applicable ammonia refrigeration requirements
- Assist with general mechanical or facility maintenance when refrigeration work is caught up
- Be available for additional hours during blueberry processing and other peak production periods
Qualifications
Preferred candidates will have:
- Previous experience operating or maintaining an industrial ammonia refrigeration system
- Strong understanding of industrial refrigeration principles
- Experience with ammonia compressors, evaporators, condensers, pumps, valves, controls, and defrost systems
- Ability to read refrigeration pressures, temperatures and operating conditions and recognize when something is abnormal
- Mechanical troubleshooting and repair ability
- Experience with electrical controls, VFDs, motors, sensors, and industrial equipment is an asset
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions when troubleshooting equipment
- Strong commitment to ammonia and industrial safety
- Ability to keep accurate operating and maintenance records
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools
- Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs. and work around industrial equipment, ladders, mechanical rooms, and cold environments
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance
Experience in cold storage, food processing, IQF/freezing operations, or industrial refrigeration is strongly preferred.
Relevant ammonia refrigeration training or certifications such as RETA, CARO, CIRO, or equivalent industrial refrigeration experience are considered an asset.
Schedule
The normal schedule is approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Hours may vary depending on refrigeration requirements and production schedules. During our busy processing season, additional hours and overtime may be available or required.
Because refrigeration is critical to our operation, occasional after-hours availability may be required for urgent refrigeration issues.
Compensation
$40.00–$45.00 per hour, depending on ammonia refrigeration experience, mechanical ability, certifications, and overall qualifications.
Overtime is paid as applicable.
