The HUC plays an important role in supporting the daily operations of the nursing department by providing administrative and clerical support, maintaining accurate resident information, assisting with communication, and helping ensure the nursing unit operates efficiently.

The Health Unit Coordinator works closely with nursing staff, providers, residents, families, and other departments to support communication and coordination of care. Responsibilities include maintaining resident charts and records, processing physician orders and paperwork, scheduling appointments and transportation, assisting with admissions and discharges, answering phones, organizing nursing unit documents, and ensuring information is communicated to the appropriate team members.

The HUC also assists nursing leadership with administrative tasks, audits, documentation, and other duties that help keep the nursing department organized and compliant. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities throughout the day.

Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative and clerical support to the nursing department.
  • Maintain resident charts, records, and nursing documentation.
  • Process physician orders and ensure information is communicated to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Schedule resident appointments and coordinate transportation as needed.
  • Answer phones and communicate professionally with residents, families, providers, and staff.
  • Maintain and organize nursing unit forms, records, and supplies.
  • Assist nursing leadership with audits, reports, and other administrative tasks.
  • Support communication between nursing and other departments.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining an organized and efficient nursing unit.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support resident care and facility operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn electronic health record systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive resident information.
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in healthcare, long-term care, or an administrative/clerical role preferred but not required.
