Job Summary:

Provides direct and indirect patient care in the maternity setting. Communicates with physicians/charge nurses about changes in patients’ clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies, and symptomatology. Can respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Additionally, can perform general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision. Participates in performance improvement activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Uses Med Administration and scans medication at the bedside.
  • Ability to assess neonates at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to policy and procedure. Attends and participates in monthly Early Lung Recruitment simulations.
  • Ability, under direct supervision of a Charge Nurse, to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy.
  • Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors while consulting and following the doctor's orders.
  • Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient's response to treatment, and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness. Assessment and vital signs are completed and noted in Cerner in an adequate time for the doctor's rounds.
  • Able to delegate workload appropriate to other staff when necessary
  • Formulates a teaching plan, based upon discharge videos and identifying learning needs, and evaluates the effectiveness of learning for every patient (family is included in teaching as appropriate).
  • Communicates appropriately, kindly, and clearly with other nurses.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Provides care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures in the newborn nursery, postpartum.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Demonstrates and thoroughly completes post-partum and nursery discharge teaching with documentation.
  • Promote patient safety by barcode scanning medications after medication administration. The OB department's goal is 90%.
  • Completes assigned extra duties for the year. Please write a comment about what your duty was and whether you succeeded or failed to accomplish this task. If you do not have a task, please come prepared to discuss ideas for your task for the next fiscal year. (i.e., infection control prevention, chart review, QI, healing model leader, safety champion, etc.)
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to physicians about the doctor's orders and the care of the patient.
  • Maintain a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
  • Uses the seven medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  • Participates in the orientation and development of new staff members.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Clean equipment correctly.

Professional Requirements:

  • Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times.
  • Excellent attendance record.
  • Wears appropriate clothing for job functions. Wears an ID badge.
  • Wears ID Badge.
  • Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, administration and staff.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Attends staff meetings/ELR Meeting, missing no more than 2 meetings. Completes competency trainings (skills day, Lippincott, and Doctract assignments).
  • Arrives to work on time and ready to start report. Manages time wisely throughout the shift and is prepared to leave work when shift report is complete.
  • Respects co-worker's privacy and maintains professional standards regarding personal situations. (i.e., gossiping, spreading rumors, speculating, speaking unkindly about other staff members)
  • Communicates patient information with charge nurse when needed.
  • Clocks in after shift and out after shift ends.
  • Meets HIPAA standards.
  • Demonstrates the Healing Model with professional skill.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Current state-licensed Vocational/Practical Nurse Licensure
  • One or more years of recent Post-partum experience
  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification
  • BCLS certification
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. certification
  • ACLS encouraged.
