About the Role:
As a Diesel Mechanic within the transportation and warehousing industry, you will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and safety of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Your primary focus will be diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems to minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency. You will work closely with fleet managers and other maintenance personnel to schedule and perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance. This role demands a strong commitment to quality workmanship and adherence to safety standards to support the smooth operation of transportation services. Ultimately, your expertise will contribute to the longevity and performance of the fleet, directly impacting the company’s ability to meet delivery and service commitments across the United States.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a formal diesel mechanic training program or apprenticeship.
- Proven experience working as a diesel mechanic, preferably in a transportation or warehousing environment.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems, electrical systems, and hydraulic components.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic reports.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in diesel engines or related areas.
- Experience with computerized diagnostic tools and fleet management software.
- Familiarity with environmental and safety regulations specific to the transportation industry.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends or on-call shifts as needed.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed diagnostics and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and other vehicle systems using specialized tools and equipment.
- Conduct routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, and system inspections to prevent mechanical failures.
- Collaborate with fleet management to prioritize repair schedules and ensure timely completion of maintenance work.
- Maintain accurate records of all repairs, maintenance activities, and parts inventory to support operational transparency and compliance.
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and environmental regulations while handling hazardous materials and operating heavy machinery.
Skills:
The required skills enable the diesel mechanic to accurately diagnose and repair complex engine and vehicle issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance. Proficiency in reading technical manuals and schematics is essential for understanding vehicle systems and executing precise repairs. Preferred skills such as ASE certification and experience with diagnostic software enhance the mechanic’s ability to efficiently troubleshoot and maintain modern diesel engines. Strong communication and teamwork skills facilitate effective collaboration with fleet managers and other maintenance staff to prioritize and complete tasks. Additionally, adherence to safety and environmental standards is critical in daily operations to protect both personnel and the environment.
