Job Description

The Director of Finance (DOF) is responsible for providing executive level leadership in the financial matters of Urban Peak, a $12MM 501 (c) (3) organization. In collaboration with the Finance Committee and Board of Directors, the DOF serves as a thought partner to the CEO in developing and implementing financial strategies across the organization to ensure program success and long-term fiscal sustainability. The DOF serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, a collaboration of program and administrative Directors who establish priorities to achieve strategic objectives and oversees finance staff who handle all financial activities for the organization.

Who You Are:

  • A Master of Business Administration (MBA) in finance, OR a master’s in accounting degree or related field and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a financial leadership position including financial analysis, staff supervision, strategic planning, roll-up budgeting, audits and high-level problem solving.
  • Experience presenting financial information to Board of Directors and/or Finance Committee.
  • Executive level financial management experience as well as hands-on accounting experience.
  • Experience with not for profit and fund accounting, government reporting, and audits; single audit experience preferred.
  • Capital project financial management experience preferred.
  • Accounting software experience using fund accounting; Blackbaud Financial Edge preferred.
  • Have a commitment to the mission of Urban Peak and a desire to understand trauma informed care and positive youth development.
  • Lived experience reflective of the youth we serve encouraged but not required
  • Must be computer proficient and possess experience of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Understanding of the provision of and commitment to trauma-informed care and positive youth development
  • Team-oriented and able to coordinate with various departments and staff.
  • Must be insurable as a driver on Urban Peak’s auto liability policy in order to conduct business on behalf of the agency or transport youth using an Urban Peak vehicle and/or an approved personal vehicle
  • Ability to pass both federal and state background checks.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment tuberculosis (TB) screening and a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Provide proof of education (HS Diploma OR Official Transcripts)

What You Will Do:

Financial Management & Planning

  • Ensure the integrity, accuracy, and transparency of all Urban Peak financial transactions.
  • Produce accurate, timely, and valuable internal and external financial reports.
  • Review monthly close information and assist finance team with close as needed.
  • Create monthly (or more frequent) financial statements and perform variance analysis to budget.
  • Analyze operating performance and manage to an operating break-even exclusive of “below the line” items such as gains/losses on asset sales, investment returns, etc.
  • Manage capital asset accounting; ensure fixed assets are properly recorded, depreciated, and retired.
  • Monitor and report on investment performance including adherence to Investment Policies established by the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee organizational cash flow and movement of funds to meet operational needs and capital plans.
  • Review and approve payroll ensuring a viable audit trail is maintained for payroll changes.
  • Review and approve reconciliations for all bank and investment accounts.
  • Stay up to date on nonprofit best practices, local/state/federal law and regulations regarding nonprofit financial and administrative operations.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities; provide recommendations to the CEO and Board as requested.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies which meet or exceed industry standards.


Budget Development & Oversight


  • Manage the annual budget process ensuring resources are spent in a fiscally responsible manner in accordance with Urban Peak’s mission and strategic priorities.
  • Prepare and distribute financial packets to Directors with budgetary responsibilities.
  • Provide technical assistance and training in reading financial information and creating a budget.
  • Review department/program budgets and supporting information.
  • Create the agency’s government revenue and capital expenditure budgets, organizational staffing plan, and employee benefit offerings.
  • Create a comprehensive roll-up agency budget.
  • Work with the CEO to establish budget priorities and reduce expenses if needed.
  • Prepare and present a balanced agency-wide budget to the Finance Committee outlining major assumptions.
  • Prepare and distribute quarterly budget tracking information to Directors highlighting any areas of concern.
  • Work with Directors to reduce expenses as needed to maintain in alignment with budgets.

Organizational Funding, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Identify funding needs of the organization and communicate these to the CEO and Development Team.
  • Develop detailed budgets for government and restricted philanthropic grant requests.
  • Oversee grant billings and reporting to ensure compliance with all pre and post award requirements.
  • Prepare and submit financial reports as required by funders.
  • Participate in funding program audits as needed.
  • Responsible for accurate grant spend projections and the timely submission of budget amendments.
  • Senior financial liaison with government funders and large restricted foundations.
  • Manage risk via appropriate insurance coverage for all organizational activities and properties.
