Staff Pharmacist - PRN
Job Description
ROLE SUMMARY
Howard University Hospital is seeking a licensed Clinical Staff Pharmacist to join our Inpatient Pharmacy team on a per diem basis. In this role you will provide direct pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages — reviewing and interpreting medication orders, evaluating drug therapy against age, organ function and underlying disease, and serving as a drug information resource for clinicians across the Hospital. Per diem scheduling gives you the flexibility to supplement your practice while contributing to a Level 1 Trauma Center that has served the District of Columbia for more than 150 years.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Provide pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages in an effective and efficient manner, collaborating with a wide range of Hospital personnel.
- Assume legal responsibility for the proper interpretation and timely processing of medication orders, maintain an accurate medication profile for each patient, and check all medications prepared for dispensing.
- Evaluate medication orders as they relate to age, organ function and underlying disease to ensure appropriate drug therapy, and intervene with physicians to correct or clarify ambiguous or erroneous orders.
- Serve as a drug information resource for the Hospital — medication availability, therapeutic alternatives, special precautions, IV compatibility and contraindications.
- Participate in monitoring and forecasting pharmaceutical inventory levels to support efficient, economical pharmacy operations.
- Document adverse drug events and medication errors in Safety Intelligence as they occur and help determine corrective action plans to educate staff.
- Recommend alternatives for non-formulary drug requests and, when necessary, coordinate procurement of non-formulary drugs with the Director of Pharmacy.
- Ensure proper labeling, packaging and storage of all pharmaceutical products dispensed; maintain and monitor prepackaged medications and supplies, including regular inspection of assigned areas for proper labeling, storage, dating and stocking.
- Support the Director and Assistant Director of Pharmacy Services with patient care, education and training, research, and community service activities.
- Uphold the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics, HIPAA privacy requirements and federal healthcare program requirements, and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited college of pharmacy. A Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited institution is also accepted.
- Completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency.
- Registration as a Pharmacist in the District of Columbia, or eligibility for reciprocity from another jurisdiction.
- Expert knowledge of pharmaceutical practice and industry best practices, including handling, storage and special preparation techniques for pharmaceuticals.
- High attention to detail, with demonstrated ability to carefully check pediatric and neonatal orders and prepared doses.
- Effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well both independently and cooperatively within a team, and to adapt to changing daily assignments and frequent interruptions.
- Computer literacy, with the ability to master the software required for prescription verification.
- Availability to work variable per diem shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job, which include standing for the majority of the shift and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 35 pounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One (1) year of experience practicing as a pharmacist.
- Acute care or hospital inpatient pharmacy experience.
