Dietary Cook

Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this job position is to be responsible for the preparation of assigned menu items according to standard recipes and department procedures. The incumbent must possess a general knowledge of all cook positions and understand the HAACP/Food Safety Program to ensure the highest degree of quality resident care is maintained at all times.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required or must be enrolled for completion of High School Diploma

• Minimum of one year kitchen experience in a hospital, skilled nursing facility, or other related medical facility

• Possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel

• Knowledgeable of kitchen procedures, cooking characteristics of various cuts of meats, and names and contents of dishes, etc.

Special Requirements:

• Must be able to cook a variety of foods in large quantities

• Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language

• Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant

• Possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public

• Knowledgeable of food service areas for sanitation, order, safety, and proper performance of assigned duties

Physical Demands:

• Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, stir, and move intermittently throughout the workday

• Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position

• Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that enable these senses to function

• Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.

• Works in well-lit and ventilated areas. Atmosphere is warm from cooking.

• May be exposed to hot/cold temperatures in kitchen and storage areas.

• Subject to falls, cuts, burns from equipment, hot foods, infectious diseases, odors, etc.
