Description
The Utility Excavator Operator is responsible for safely operating excavators and related heavy equipment to support underground utility and pipeline installation. This position performs trench excavation, grading, bedding, pipe placement, backfilling, and other earthwork while working closely with pipelayers, laborers, and site supervisors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Able to stand and work outdoors in direct sunlight for long periods of time.
  • Experience setting up and using a pipe laser.
  • Experience laying 8-inch to 48-inch pipe inside structures and trenches.
  • Experience with storm drainage, water, and sewer systems.
  • Able to shoot and maintain proper grade.
  • Experience working with different sizes and configurations of trench boxes, including single and double-stacked trench boxes.
  • Knowledge of proper trench-box installation, movement, and removal.
  • Confined Space Training preferred.
  • OSHA 7410 training/certification preferred.
  • Experience operating an excavator.
  • Able to safely handle a trench box and material box during excavation operations.
  • Able to safely excavate around laborers and other employees working inside or near the trench.
  • Must understand excavation safety, underground utilities, proper slopes, trench protection, and safe working distances.



Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • Must have experience of operating excavators on a utility crew
  • Must be able to climb in and out of equipment unassisted
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Frequently lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be willing and able to travel to other project sites throughout the Southeastern U.S. as needed
  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule, including working overtime and weekends as needed
