Out-of-School Time (OST) Specialist

PURPOSE OF POSITIONThe Out-of-School Time (OST) Specialist supports the academic, social–emotional, cultural, and leadership development of Navajo Preparatory School students during after-school and extended learning hours. Grounded in Diné cultural values, the IB Learner Profile, and 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) goals, this role focuses on enrichment programming, student engagement, and holistic wellness. The OST Specialist designs and facilitates meaningful learning experiences that promote student voice, leadership development, cultural connection, and real-world skill building. This position is distinct from academic tutoring and instead centers on creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where students can explore interests, build relationships, and thrive as emerging leaders. The OST Specialist is encouraged to bring their own skills, interests, and passions into programming, creating opportunities for students to explore real-world skills, creative expression, and culturally relevant learning experiences. The Navajo/Indian preference law shall apply in all aspects of the position. EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION The position is placed on the approved NPS Substitute Pay Schedule TERM OF EMPLOYMENT Salary and work calendar established yearly by budget and salary scale WORK SCHEDULETypical hours:Sunday: 5:30–8:30 PMMonday–Thursday: 3:00–8:30 PM (Flexible based on events and programming) WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in classrooms, offices, the Hogan, gymnasium, outdoor spaces, and off-campus learning environments. The position involves moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, and carrying materials, as well as supervision of students during outdoor and recreational activities. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required for events and field trips. SUPERVISORPrimary: 21st Century Site Coordinator RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Program Design & FacilitationDesign and deliver engaging OST programming aligned with:Diné language and cultureSocial-emotional wellnessCollege and career readinessReal-world life skills and hands-on skill building opportunities that reflect the facilitator's strengths and interestsRecreation, arts, and enrichment opportunitiesFacilitate structured and student-led activities, including workshops, clubs, and experiential learning opportunities.Integrate student voice, leadership, and choice into program development (e.g., student-led groups, peer mentorship, leadership initiatives).Support culturally grounded programming such as Culture Nights, Wellness activities, and community-based learning.Incorporate personal skills, talents, and areas of passion into programming to provide students with diverse, engaging, and meaningful learning experiences. Student Engagement & Leadership DevelopmentFoster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students.Serve as a mentor and positive role model.Encourage student participation, leadership, and ownership of programming.Support peer mentorship and leadership opportunities. Data, Attendance & Program ImprovementMaintain accurate attendance records for all OST activities.Utilize systems such as EZReports, Modern Campus Involve, and survey tools.Collect and analyze student feedback to improve programming.Support reporting requirements for 21st CCLC grant compliance. Student Safety & Program OversightSupervise students during on-campus and off-campus activities.Ensure safe use of facilities, equipment, and materials.Support structured use of program spaces (rec room, Hogan, fitness areas, etc.).Follow school safety procedures and reporting protocols. Experiential Learning & TripsSupport planning and facilitation of:Field tripsCollege visitsCultural exchangesOutdoor recreation opportunitiesEnsure safety, logistics, and student engagement during all off-campus experiences. Family & Community EngagementSupport family engagement events (Culture Nights, Round Dances, etc.)Build relationships with families and community partners.Assist in promoting OST programming to students and families. Collaboration & Professional GrowthCollaborate with school staff, residential life, and community partner.Participate in professional development related to youth development, cultural responsiveness, and OST best practices.Support overall Student Life & Wellness initiatives.
