MISSION

Kheir’s mission is to increase and provide access to culturally and linguistically-sensitive quality primary healthcare and human services support to the underserved and uninsured residents of Southern California.

ASSIGNMENT SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist plays a pivotal role in supporting clinical operations. This individual will be responsible for assisting physicians and medical staff, maintaining examination rooms and medical equipment, and performing clinical tasks. The role also involves overseeing phlebotomy and laboratory procedures, ensuring accurate collection and processing of specimens while adhering to infection control protocols. Additionally, the Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist may support front office functions such as reception, patient intake, and medical record keeping as needed. The Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist should have comprehensive clinical knowledge and experience with all medical assisting procedures. They will report to the Sr. Director of Patient Services. This is a fulltime, non-exempt, hourly position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High School diploma or equivalent.

• Medical Assistant Certificate with Venipuncture proficiency.

• Basic knowledge of EKG and Vital Signs Parameters.

• Phlebotomy Certification.

• Current BLS certification.

• A minimum of 2 years of related experience.

• Detail-oriented with commitment to precision in specimen collection and handling.

• Proficiency in medical terminology.

• Proficient in the use of laboratory equipment and tools.

• Proficiency in infection control protocols and practices.

• Knowledge of filing procedures and practices.

• Demonstrated ability to exchange pertinent non-routine information.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Capacity to interpret various forms of instructions, including written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedules.

• Ability to use tact, discretion, and sensitivity when interacting with patients.

• Understanding of privacy regulations and compliance, including HIPAA.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Experience in a Community Clinic (FQHC) considered a plus.

• Bilingual proficiency in our service languages (English/Spanish, English/Thai, English/Korean, English/Bengali) is highly desirable.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct thorough patient assessments, including reviewing medical histories and recording vital signs.

%CF; Perform various clinical procedures, including administering injections, conducting venipuncture, electrocardiograms (EKGs), urinalysis, and accu-checks.

• Execute blood draws and specimen collections with precision, adhering to established protocols and maintaining aseptic techniques to ensure sample integrity.

• Implement and uphold rigorous infection control measures to safeguard patients and staff during specimen collection, storage, and transportation.

• Accurately label, document, and prepare collected specimen for laboratory analysis, complying with established procedures and ensuring proper transportation.

• Manage and replenish medical supplies and equipment, ensuring readiness for clinical activities.

• Maintain and monitor the proper functioning of medical equipment, such as daily temperature checks for refrigerators and freezers.

• Prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are organized and well-equipped for patient visits.

• Provide support in the examination room as needed, assisting healthcare providers during patient care.

• Efficiently manage patient flow within the clinic during operational hours.

• Collect, process, and handle patient specimens with care and accuracy.

• Ensure that all laboratory results are promptly reviewed by physicians and correctly filed.

• Assist in scheduling patient appointments, performing filing and typing tasks, data entry, and contributing to effective record-keeping.

• Maintain organized and up-to-date medical records in accordance with established filing systems.

• Actively participate in staff and educational meetings to foster a collaborative and informed healthcare environment.

• Flexibly to undertake any additional duties as assigned to support clinic operations and patient care.

• Other duties as assigned.
