Job Description
Overview
The IT Technician is responsible for installing, configuring, maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting information technology systems and infrastructure within a data center and/or industrial power plant environment. This position provides hands-on technical support for computers, networking equipment, communications systems, servers, cabling, and other IT infrastructure that supports critical plant and data center operations.
This individual will receive guidance from leadership and should be responsive to customer questions or concerns and address any issues in a timely manner.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, network, connectivity, and equipment issues.
- Respond to IT service requests and troubleshoot issues in a timely manner.
- Escalate complex issues to senior IT personnel, network engineers, controls personnel, or other appropriate departments.
- Perform preventative maintenance on IT and communications equipment.
- Document troubleshooting activities, repairs, equipment changes, and system configurations.
- Assist with system testing and verification following installations or repairs.
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of servers, switches, network equipment, and other data center infrastructure.
- Perform rack-and-stack activities, including mounting equipment, cable management, labeling, and equipment removal.
- Maintain organized and properly labeled cabling and equipment racks.
- Monitor equipment for alarms, connectivity issues, hardware failures, and environmental concerns.
- Follow data center procedures for access, equipment handling, change management, and system maintenance.
- Assist with maintaining high availability and reliability of critical IT infrastructure
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 1–3 years of experience in IT, networking, telecommunications, data center operations, industrial technology, or a related field preferred.
- Strong understanding of basic computer hardware, software, and networking concepts.
- Experience troubleshooting computers, network connectivity, and electronic equipment.
- Ability to read and understand basic technical documentation, diagrams, and equipment specifications.
- Basic knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, LAN/WAN, DHCP, DNS, and wireless networking preferred.
- Ability to install, terminate, label, and test copper and/or fiber-optic cabling preferred.
- Ability to use basic hand tools and electronic/network testing equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical personnel.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to work in an industrial environment and around electrical, mechanical, and communications equipment.
Working Conditions
- Walk, crawl, talk, see, read, hear, feel, sit, stand, kneel, crouch, twist, reach, grasp and climb with both hands and legs for extended periods of time
- Lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Climb at heights of 300’+ for extended periods of time
- Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
