BPAS Actuarial and Pension Services, seeks candidates for the position of Healthcare Actuarial Consultant in our Syracuse, NY office (remote work arrangements may be considered for the right candidate). Our consultants are distinguished by their quality, their depth of experience, and their dedication to excellence. We consult with executives at more than 800 companies, not-for profit institutions, and government agencies across the country ranging in size from 1 to 20,000 employees.
The candidate will work within our Health Benefit Consulting Services practice on the health and benefit programs of mid-large size clients.
Responsibilities
The candidate will work within our Health Benefit Consulting Services practice on the health and benefit programs of mid-large size clients.
Essential Skills:
- Perform actuarial valuations, including development of retiree-specific claims costs, following applicable accounting standards and actuarial standards of practice, including ASC 715-60, GASB 75, and Statutory accounting
- Analyze financial implications associated with active and retiree health benefits programs, including actuarial cost projections for alternative plan designs, contribution strategies, and plan administration
- Strong knowledge of Health & Welfare plan designs, funding arrangements, pricing strategies, provider networks, and competitive market practices
- Advise clients regarding state and federal statutory, regulatory, and other compliance related issues
- Develop active and retiree-specific premium equivalent rates for budgeting and COBRA administration
- Develop claims reserves for self-insured plans
- Utilize valuation software and programming as well as Microsoft Office suite
- Utilize standardized spreadsheet tools and develop customized models for special projects
- Interface with clients and communicate resulting analysis both verbally and via written reports
- Identify opportunities for new sales or cross-selling potential
Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics or other related field
- ASA or FSA credentials
- Minimum 8 years experience with GASB 75 retiree health valuation experience preferred
- Knowledge of Health & Welfare plan design, pricing strategies, and competitive market practices
- Strong analytical, technical, and problem solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and client service mentality
- Attention to detail, organization, and ability to prioritize in a rapidly changing environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and produce high-quality deliverables in a timely manner
- Conscientious, self-motivated, and able to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team
Project management experience and aptitude to train, mentor, and review work of entry level actuarial analysts
