We are looking for a detail-oriented Cost Accountant to join a services organization in San Antonio, Texas. This contract opportunity has the potential to become permanent and will focus on project-based accounting, cost monitoring, and financial reporting to help maintain visibility into budgets and overall job performance. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical skills and a solid understanding of purchasing transactions, reconciliations, and cost reporting in a project-driven environment.
Responsibilities:
• Maintain accurate cost records across projects by capturing labor, materials, subcontractor charges, equipment usage, and allocated overhead
• Examine purchase orders, supplier invoices, and supporting documentation to confirm correct assignment of costs to each job
• Compare actual spending to approved budgets, identify cost variances, and research the underlying drivers of exceptions
• Reconcile project-related financial activity with the general ledger to support complete and reliable reporting
• Produce regular reporting on job costs, margin performance, and budget-to-actual results for internal stakeholders
• Work closely with project leaders, operations teams, and external vendors to address billing issues and cost discrepancies
• Contribute to month-end accounting activities, including accrual preparation, close support, and audit-ready documentation
• Assist with purchasing-related cost tracking to improve oversight of project expenditures and financial accuracy• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is preferred
• At least 3 years of experience in cost accounting, job costing, or project accounting
• Practical knowledge of purchase orders, vendor invoicing, and project-based purchasing processes
• Strong Excel capabilities and experience using accounting or ERP systems
• Ability to analyze cost data, interpret variances, and communicate findings clearly
• Well-developed organizational skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Effective written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
