Aerotek
Houston, TX, US Full Time

Job Description

Job Description
Job Title: CNC Mill Machinist (Days)

.

.

Job Description

Machining very large, tight-tolerance components for critical applications using CNC milling equipment. You will work in a job shop environment, operating primarily large mills and horizontal boring mills to produce complex parts that can exceed six feet in height and weigh thousands of pounds. You will use Fanuc controls, perform G-code edits, and confidently run parts at programmed speeds and feeds to meet demanding quality and safety standards.

.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate large CNC milling machines and horizontal boring mills to machine very large parts, including components for subsea pipelines, valve bodies, flange-like pieces, and large drill bits.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions to determine machining operations, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Fanuc controls to run programs, make G-code edits, and adjust offsets to maintain tight tolerances and high-quality finishes.
  • Perform job shop style work, producing custom or low-volume parts rather than mass production, and adapt to varying part geometries and setups.
  • Set up machines, including selecting tooling, fixturing, and workholding appropriate for very large, heavy components.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and other inspection tools to verify part dimensions and tolerances.
  • Operate and, when needed, assist with other equipment such as vertical turning lathes (VTL), horizontal mills, and long bed lathes.
  • Monitor machine performance during long machining cycles, identify issues, and make necessary adjustments to maintain quality and efficiency.
  • Move and position large parts within the shop using appropriate equipment and safe handling practices, as machinists move their own parts.
  • Follow strict safety procedures and contribute to a safety-focused culture, especially when working with very large, heavy components.
  • Collaborate with other machinists, welders, and quality personnel to ensure parts meet specifications throughout multi-step manufacturing processes.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area within a large shop environment, despite the challenges posed by very large parts.

.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of CNC machining experience with large parts in a job shop environment.
  • Proficiency operating CNC mills and horizontal boring mills (HBM) for large, heavy components.
  • Experience with Fanuc controls, including the ability to perform G-code edits and adjust programs at the machine.
  • Strong job shop experience with custom or low-volume work rather than mass production.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated experience holding tight tolerances on large parts and maintaining consistent quality.
  • Competence using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and related inspection equipment.
  • Experience with CNC setup, including tooling selection, fixturing, and machine offsets.
  • Familiarity with vertical mills, horizontal mills, and potentially long bed lathes and VTLs.
  • Safety-conscious mindset with a proven record of working safely around large equipment and heavy parts.
  • Ability to run machines at programmed speeds and feeds without unnecessary slowdowns while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Comfort working with multi-axis CNC equipment in a machine shop environment.

.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with vertical mills and long bed lathes.
  • CNC programming experience beyond basic G-code edits.
  • Extensive job shop experience handling a wide variety of part types and materials.
  • Experience with horizontal boring mills (HBM) and vertical turning lathes (VTL).
  • Exposure to Mazak or other CNC control systems in addition to Fanuc.
  • Familiarity with robotic or arc welding operations and coordination with welding processes.
  • Ability to manage long machining cycles, including parts that require multiple weeks of machining and intermediate welding steps.

.

Why Work Here?

You will join a company that builds complex, high-value components for a wide range of industries, not just oil and gas, providing stability and variety in the work. The organization encourages creativity and diversification in its projects, giving you exposure to challenging, technically interesting parts. You can expect substantial hours and the opportunity to earn strong income, with leadership committed to taking care of employees who support demanding production schedules. The culture emphasizes safety, teamwork, and mutual support, with everyone helping each other to handle large parts and complex jobs in a collaborative environment.

.

Work Environment

Large, air-conditioned machine shop designed to accommodate very large parts. The shop is clean, though organization can be challenging due to the size and footprint of the components, which often occupy significant floor space.

The culture is strongly safety-oriented because of the size and weight of the parts and the seriousness of the procedures involved.

The team includes about 12 CNC machinists on day shift, 2 on night shift, 8 welders performing arc and robotic welding, and 2 quality control professionals.

Parts often follow a long process, such as one week of machining, several days of welding, and another week of machining, and machinists move their own parts rather than relying on dedicated material handlers.

The standard day shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with typical Saturday work of 8–10 hours and occasional Sunday work possible in certain circumstances. For reference, the night shift follows a similar 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. schedule, Monday through Friday, with comparable Saturday expectations and a night differential available.

Required attire includes steel-toe footwear, safety glasses, and a work shirt, reflecting the emphasis on safety and professionalism in the shop.
