Structural Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking a skilled Structural Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will design steel decking according to industry standards and contribute to a variety of exciting projects including retail buildings, schools, and warehouses. You will provide engineering direction to multiple departments and communicate effectively with architects and engineers.
Responsibilities- Design steel decking according to Steel Deck Institute standards.
- Review and develop engineering tools specific to steel deck.
- Create roof and floor designs for various projects such as retail buildings, schools, and warehouses.
- Provide engineering direction to detailing, design, sales, and production departments.
- Interpret contract documents and communicate with architects, engineers of record, and fabricators on product design requirements.
- Design joists and joist girders per Steel Joist Institute standards.
- Familiarize with AISC, SJI, and SDI codes and specifications.
- Review incoming projects to verify materials and scope align with original estimates.
- Perform initial reviews of contract drawings, especially for complex projects, to identify key structural considerations and loading requirements.
- Guide detailers and designers by documenting instructions and addressing loads in drawings.
- Respond to questions or discrepancies by contacting the engineer of record or submitting RFIs.
- Review detailing documents for accuracy and compliance before release to designers.
- Communicate unresolved or missing detailing items to designers and review changes submitted by clients or engineers.
- Support designers by reviewing updates prior to joist creation and shop order submission.
- Occasionally create joist designs and submit shop orders.
- Develop and issue field modification drawings for fabrication issues or on-site condition changes.
- Manage and support field modifications.
- Serve as a technical resource by answering material-related questions and providing certifications or guidance.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent for Civil P.E. qualification.
- Minimum Civil E.I.T. certification with the desire to become a Civil P.E. (having passed the FE exam).
- Interest in structural steel design, specifically steel deck design.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience in the steel deck industry or structural steel design.
- Prior experience in the steel joist industry.
- Civil P.E. certification.
- Familiarity with software such as Ansys, STAAD, RISA, MathCAD, or AutoCAD.
The work environment is fairly casual but deadline-driven. The office is located on the second floor, adjacent to the fabrication facility, but regular visits to the facility are not required. Each engineer has their own office and the team operates with an open-door policy to foster collaboration. The engineering team currently consists of six engineers, and you will be joining a supportive and professional team.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Butler, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $38.08 - $46.15/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
