Job Description
The Machine Operator and Assembler sets up and operates production machinery, loads and unloads parts, performs product assembly, and conducts quality checks to ensure all products meet established specifications. This role supports continuous manufacturing operations by following standard operating procedures, maintaining equipment, and contributing to a safe and efficient production environment.
Responsibilities
- Operate production line machinery safely and efficiently, including loading and unloading parts into machines.
- Perform product assembly tasks according to work instructions and quality standards.
- Conduct regular quality checks on products and make necessary adjustments to keep output within required specifications.
- Reject products that do not meet quality standards and document issues as needed.
- Troubleshoot production line machinery to identify and resolve basic operational problems.
- Perform equipment change-overs as needed to support different production runs.
- Follow all standard operating procedures and Job Safety Analysis guidelines during daily work.
- Complete accurate daily production logs and other required documentation.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PMs) on production line machinery to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
- Communicate effectively with operators from other shifts to ensure smooth handoffs and consistent production.
- Clean and maintain the work area to support safety, efficiency, and product quality.
- Turn off and lock out equipment when not in use, following lockout/tagout procedures.
- Assist maintenance personnel and manufacturing engineers as needed with equipment and process-related tasks.
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to new employees to help them learn machinery operation and assembly processes.
- Carry out other production and assembly duties as assigned to support manufacturing goals.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 6 months of production or manufacturing experience.
- Experience with machine operation in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Hands-on experience with production assembly and general labor tasks.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to stand for up to 8 hours during a shift.
- Ability to read and follow written instructions, complete basic documentation, and perform basic math.
- Comfort working with measurements that go down to the millimeter and ability to use measurement tools accurately.
- Ability to work safely around machinery, welders, and assembly equipment while following safety procedures.
- Reliability in following standard operating procedures and job safety analyses.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in general production or assembly line work.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment with multiple machines and processes.
- Familiarity with quality control practices in a production setting.
- Ability to communicate clearly with team members across different shifts.
- Willingness to assist maintenance and manufacturing engineers with equipment and process improvements.
- Capability to train and mentor new employees on machinery operation and assembly tasks.

Work Environment
The role is based in a busy manufacturing facility where machines, welders, and assemblers operate within the same building. The environment can be dirty, and there is no air conditioning, so candidates should be comfortable working in a non-climate-controlled setting. Steel-toe footwear is required as part of the safety dress code. The team currently consists of around 60 employees and is continuing to grow. The primary schedule is first shift, running from 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday through Thursday, for a 10-hour shift, with overtime available on Fridays as needed.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Canton, SD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
