Job Description

The Phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing high-quality specimen collection, handling, and processing, while also contributing to troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement. This position focuses on accurate venipuncture and other specimen collection methods, meticulous labeling and documentation, and strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test orders and labels are 100% accurate.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Maintain specimen integrity by storing samples at required temperatures and placing them in appropriate collection containers and tubes.
  • Follow detailed procedures for packaging specimens for transport to ensure safe handling and compliance with protocol.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure records are current and complete.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety standards at all times.
  • Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing education to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Support troubleshooting efforts and contribute recommendations to improve workflow and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with training activities as needed to help develop and support other team members.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture and blood draws using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders and labels.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Overall 2–4 years of experience in a healthcare or laboratory environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
  • Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with pediatric patients during blood draws and specimen collection.
  • Comfort handling a variety of specimen types, including urine and fecal samples.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens and test orders simultaneously.
  • Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and laboratory scripts with precision.
  • Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Customer service mindset with the ability to answer telephone inquiries and relay laboratory results professionally.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental education to stay current with procedures and best practices.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to contribute to workflow improvements and process recommendations.

Work Environment

This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment that emphasizes accuracy, safety, and patient-focused care. You work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen containers, and computer systems running Microsoft Office Suite. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and laboratory staff, handling a variety of specimen types and following strict protocols for labeling, storage, transport, and regulatory compliance. Annual departmental trainings and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations are integral to the work setting, supporting a culture of continuous learning, safety, and professional development.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Culver City, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.16 - $25.16/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
