Process Engineer
Job Description
Job Title: Process Engineer
Job Description
The Process Engineer will join a highly skilled engineering organization focused on developing advanced dry etch processes for next-generation semiconductor technology nodes. This role will sit on either the Process Development team or the Defects & Productivity team, with a primary need on the Process Development side. The engineer will run experiments, analyze results, and present regular reports to customers while supporting the development, optimization, and DOE-driven tuning of dry etch processes that enable customer tool-of-record selections.
Responsibilities
- Execute process development and optimization activities for advanced dry etch and plasma etch processes used in semiconductor manufacturing.
- Design, run, and monitor experiments for customers, including DOE-driven process tuning to meet specific performance targets and device integration requirements.
- Prepare and deliver regular daily and weekly reports and presentations to customers that clearly communicate experimental plans, results, conclusions, and recommended next steps.
- Support development of advanced dry etch processes that enable customer tool-of-record selections by rapidly iterating and refining process conditions.
- Collaborate closely with the Process Development or Defects & Productivity team to address process defects, improve productivity, and enhance overall process robustness.
- Work with advanced process nodes in FEOL and BEOL dry etch modules, ensuring processes meet stringent technology node requirements.
- Apply statistical process control (SPC) methods to monitor, analyze, and improve process stability and repeatability.
- Partner with Process Technicians and Analytical Team members throughout the process development cycle to ensure accurate experimentation, data collection, and analysis.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and manufacturing engineering efforts related to semiconductor equipment, tooling, and thin film processing.
- Participate in customer-facing activities and support sales-related efforts by providing technical expertise on process capabilities and performance.
- Maintain a strong focus on clean room and lab protocols, ensuring experiments and equipment are handled safely and in accordance with facility standards.
- Document process conditions, experimental setups, and results in a clear and organized manner to support knowledge sharing and future optimization.
Essential Skills
- 5–15 years of experience as a Process Engineer developing processes on semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
- Hands-on work experience with dry etch and plasma etch processes in semiconductor manufacturing.
- Strong background in process engineering within semiconductor manufacturing environments.
- Experience working with semiconductor equipment and tooling, particularly in dry etch modules.
- Demonstrated ability to perform process improvement and manufacturing engineering activities in a semiconductor context.
- Familiarity with thin film processes, deposition, and lithography as they relate to dry etch and device integration.
- Experience working in or with clean room environments and laboratory facilities.
- Proficiency in experimental design and execution, including DOE-driven process tuning.
- Knowledge and practical use of statistical process control (SPC) for monitoring and improving process performance.
- Ability to generate clear, data-driven reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and customers.
- Comfort working on advanced process nodes such as 2nm, 14A, 10A and beyond in FEOL and BEOL dry etch modules.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with dry etch or plasma etch processes on tools from major semiconductor equipment suppliers.
- Experience in semiconductor manufacturing engineering, including exposure to process optimization and productivity improvement projects.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within tight-knit, cross-functional engineering teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an experimental mindset and attention to detail.
- Interest in contributing to customer-facing and sales-related technical discussions.
- Comfort operating in a stable, long-term oriented organization with strong retention of engineering talent.
Work Environment
The role is based in an office and lab setting within a semiconductor-focused facility. The Process Engineer works in and around a clean room and laboratory environment, though not necessarily inside the clean room on a daily basis. The position involves close collaboration with Process Technicians and Analytical Team members throughout the process development cycle, fostering a strong, energized, and highly collaborative team culture. The division is relatively small and tight knit, offering a stable environment with long-term retention of Process Engineers. Work centers on advanced technology nodes and cutting-edge semiconductor equipment, with opportunities to engage in both technical development and customer-facing activities.
