Job Description
The Field Technician performs soils and construction inspection and testing services for a variety of projects, including regional and national data center work. This role focuses on field and laboratory testing, accurate documentation of results, and clear communication with project teams to ensure construction materials and practices meet required standards and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Perform field testing, observation, and inspection of soils, concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials in accordance with training, established procedures, and project specifications.
- Conduct construction inspection activities to verify that materials and workmanship comply with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Perform visual inspections of welds and ensure compliance with all applicable codes and quality standards.
- Monitor welding operations to confirm proper techniques, materials, and adherence to safety and quality procedures.
- Perform basic analysis of collected data to verify accuracy prior to communicating and submitting results to the Project Manager.
- Provide clear, detailed documentation of findings, test results, and inspection activities, maintaining accurate records for internal and client use.
- Communicate test results, observations, and potential issues to the Project Manager and other project personnel as directed.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to identify and resolve construction and welding-related issues.
- Generate inspection reports and quality documentation that support project decision-making and regulatory compliance.
- Train and mentor junior welders and inspectors as needed, sharing best practices and supporting skill development.
- Operate and maintain testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges, in accordance with radiation safety and company procedures.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and compliance with company safety policies.
- Travel to job sites, client facilities, and field locations to perform inspections and testing in varying environments and weather conditions.
- Work at heights on fixed and portable ladders, in confined or tight areas, and near heavy operating equipment and traffic ways as required by project needs.
- Lift, carry, and operate testing equipment and material samples weighing up to 30 pounds while performing field duties.
- Maintain organized records of certifications, safety training, and inspection activities to support ongoing compliance and professional development.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience using a laptop computer and proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable violation history.
- Experience and proficiency in multiple areas of field testing and inspection and/or laboratory testing.
- Ability to perform detailed visual inspections of welds and assess compliance with applicable codes.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to perform basic data analysis to verify accuracy of test results.
- Ability to clearly document findings, prepare inspection records, and generate concise reports.
- Capability to work safely in field and shop environments, including outdoor locations and operating facilities.
- Physical ability to regularly stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, reach, and lift or move up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and adjacent to traffic and heavy equipment while maintaining safety.
- Adequate vision for close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception, with the ability to adjust focus as required for inspections.
- Commitment to adhere to safety protocols, including use of PPE and participation in required medical monitoring when applicable.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of relevant experience in construction materials testing, inspection, or a closely related field, or equivalent training and related experience.
- ACI certification in Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I.
- Certification in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more categories such as Asphalt, Concrete, or Soils.
- NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more categories such as Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, or Generalist.
- ICC certification in one or more categories such as Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, or Structural Steel – Welding.
- Experience in nondestructive testing methods applied to construction materials and welds.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings.
- AWS-related certification or familiarity with applicable welding standards is beneficial.
- Background in quality inspection within construction or fabrication environments.
- Willingness to travel, including possible overnight stays, to support projects in areas such as Savannah, GA; Augusta, GA; Columbia, SC; Greenville–Spartanburg, SC; Bluffton, SC; Myrtle Beach, SC; and Charleston, SC.

Work Environment
This role operates in both field and shop environments, with frequent travel to job sites and client facilities. Work is typically performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and in operating facilities where heavy equipment is in use and traffic is present. The position may require working at heights on fixed and portable ladders, in confined or tight spaces, and in areas where exposure to hostile flora and fauna and moderate noise levels is possible. Field activities involve regular standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, climbing, and balancing, as well as lifting and moving testing equipment and material samples weighing up to 30 pounds. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory and may include hard hats, safety-toe boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, respiratory protection, and appropriate clothing suited to construction and industrial environments. The role may be subject to Hazmat and respiratory medical monitoring, and can require overnight travel to support projects across multiple locations in Georgia and South Carolina.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Savannah, GA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
