Swiss Lathe Machinist
Job Description
Job Description
This role focuses on setting up, programming, and operating Swiss-type CNC turning centers to machine precision screws and complex components, primarily for aerospace applications. You will work with both guide-bushing and chucker-kit (non-guide-bushing) configurations, using Fanuc controls and CAM software to produce high-quality parts from exotic materials while meeting stringent aerospace standards.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Swiss-type CNC turning centers, with preference for the person brand, in both guide-bushing and chucker-kit (non-guide-bushing) configurations to machine screws and precision components.
- Program, edit, and troubleshoot Swiss-type lathes using Fanuc controls (such as Fanuc 32i-B series or equivalent), including managing tool offsets, geometry, and synchronization between main and sub spindles.
- Perform complete machine setups, including guide bushing selection and adjustment, collet and bushing changes, cross and back working tool alignment, gang and turret tooling configuration, and bar feeder or sub-spindle pick-off setup.
- Create and edit CNC programs using CAM software such as ESPRIT (Swiss-Type module) and/or SolidWorks with SolidCAM for Swiss machining, including programming from 3D CAD models and post-processing for Fanuc-controlled Swiss platforms.
- Machine aerospace-grade and other exotic materials, including titanium, Inconel and other nickel alloys, Hastelloy, 17-4PH, and high-temperature stainless steels, accounting for work hardening, tool wear, and thermal expansion.
- Produce roll-threaded (thread-forming) parts in Swiss configuration, including thread rolling tool and die setup, optimizing feeds and speeds, and inspecting rolled threads for pitch diameter, lead, and proper thread ring/plug gauging.
- Read and interpret aerospace-industry drawings and specifications, including GD&T and First Article Inspection (FAI) requirements, and maintain material and process traceability consistent with aerospace quality systems such as AS9100.
- Diagnose and correct dimensional and surface-finish issues specific to Swiss-type turning, such as chatter, guide bushing wear, and deflection on long or slender parts.
- Set up machines and make necessary edits to programs and offsets to ensure parts meet dimensional and surface-finish requirements.
- Operate additional machining equipment as needed to support production and meet customer requirements.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain high quality standards, efficient workflows, and consistent output in a fast-paced aerospace manufacturing environment.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience operating Swiss-type CNC lathes.
- Proficiency in setting up and operating Swiss-type CNC turning centers in both guide-bushing and chucker-kit (non-guide-bushing) configurations.
- Ability to program, edit, and troubleshoot Fanuc-controlled Swiss lathes, including tool offsets, geometry, and main/sub-spindle synchronization.
- Experience with CNC programming for Swiss machines, including creating and editing programs at the control.
- Strong capability to perform complete machine setups, including guide bushing selection and adjustment, collet and bushing changes, tool alignment, and bar feeder or sub-spindle pick-off setup.
- Ability to read and interpret aerospace-industry drawings and specifications, including GD&T and FAI requirements.
- Experience machining aerospace-grade and exotic materials such as titanium, Inconel, nickel alloys, Hastelloy, 17-4PH, and high-temperature stainless steels.
- Skill in diagnosing and correcting dimensional and surface-finish issues unique to Swiss-type turning, such as chatter, guide bushing wear, and part deflection.
- Competence in producing roll-threaded parts, including thread rolling tool/die setup, process optimization, and thread inspection using appropriate gauges.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience creating and editing CNC programs using CAM software such as ESPRIT (Swiss-Type module).
- Experience using SolidWorks with SolidCAM for Swiss machining and programming from 3D CAD models.
- Experience working with Fanuc 32i-B series or equivalent Swiss-specific controls.
- Experience operating other machining equipment in addition to Swiss lathes.
- Familiarity with aerospace quality systems such as AS9100 and related traceability requirements.
- Knowledge of Mastercam or other CNC programming software is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, aerospace-grade components.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a production environment.
