Prototype Quality Technician
Job Description
The Prototype Quality Technician supports the vehicle prototype quality process within the research and development organization. This role focuses on precision measurement of body-in-white assemblies, individual components, and tooling using advanced metrology equipment and CAD-based measurement planning. The technician collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to ensure prototype builds meet accuracy, conformance, and overall build quality targets while supporting evolving product development and vehicle evaluation needs.
Responsibilities- Operate ZEISS blue light, ATOS, and FARO metrology equipment to measure body-in-white assemblies, individual components, and tooling with a high degree of accuracy.
- Generate detailed measurement data reports to verify dimensional accuracy, conformance to specifications, and overall build quality.
- Develop and maintain digital measurement plans that support research and development initiatives, using CAD data and defined measurement points.
- Perform JIG, fixture, and tooling measurement and scanning to ensure proper alignment, setup, and repeatability for prototype builds.
- Use CAD software to manipulate vehicle, component, and part data in support of measurement plan creation and data analysis.
- Create measurement plans from CAD software and data points, ensuring that measurement strategies align with engineering and quality requirements.
- Support prototype build activities by providing timely measurement support, feedback, and documentation to build and engineering teams.
- Respond to group requests and complete other assigned tasks as needed to support overall prototype quality and development objectives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to address changing priorities and support multiple areas of need within the prototype and R&D environment.
- Adapt to evolving customer and project requirements by assisting in multiple functional areas and maintaining a flexible, customer-focused mindset.
- Exhibit responsiveness and willingness to support a range of assignments and responsibilities aligned with prototype quality goals.
- Hands-on experience with JIG, fixture, or tooling measurement and scanning in a manufacturing or prototype environment.
- Experience using CAD software to manipulate vehicle, component, and part data, with at least 2 years of experience using tools such as CATIA, NX/Unigraphics, Creo, or SolidWorks.
- At least 2 years of experience creating measurement plans from CAD software and data points to support metrology and quality activities.
- Proficiency in metrology and dimensional quality practices, including the use of CMM and related measurement techniques.
- Ability to operate advanced metrology equipment such as ZEISS blue light, ATOS, and FARO systems or similar technologies.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to generate clear, accurate measurement data reports.
- Demonstrated ability to support customer objectives by adapting to changing priorities and assisting in multiple functional areas as required.
- Customer-focused mindset characterized by flexibility, responsiveness, and a willingness to support a broad range of assignments and responsibilities.
- Effective collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams in a prototype and R&D environment.
- Associate degree in Metrology, Quality Engineering, or a related technology field.
- Experience using key performance indicators (KPIs) for goal setting, performance tracking, and process management.
- Experience with Quality Circle activities or other structured problem-solving methods, such as TBP or similar methodologies.
- Familiarity with quality, CMM, CATIA, and general metrology practices in an automotive or manufacturing context.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and structured problem-solving efforts within the quality function.
The Prototype Quality Technician works in a research and development-focused vehicle prototype environment that emphasizes precision, quality, and collaboration. Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Saline, MI.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
