Job Description
We are seeking a Distribution Designer to support electric and gas utility distribution projects, with a primary focus on work within the PEPCO service territory. This position is responsible for developing detailed, construction-ready utility designs using CAD and utility-specific software while ensuring compliance with client requirements, utility standards, and regulatory guidelines.
This role offers the opportunity to join a growing engineering organization that is expanding into larger and more complex projects, including commercial developments, mixed-use communities, and multi-unit residential projects. Key ResponsibilitiesUtility Design & Documentation- Develop electric and gas distribution designs for residential, commercial, and development projects using MicroStation, Geographic Work Designer (GWD), and other utility-specific platforms.
- Prepare detailed design packages and construction-ready drawings that align with utility standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform distribution design work utilizing PEPCO processes, tools, and design standards.
- Use AS8 (Asset Suite 8) and Geographic Work Designer (GWD) to model utility assets, manage work orders, and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Review designs for accuracy, completeness, and constructability, implementing revisions as needed to support project success.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, utility representatives, and other stakeholders to define project requirements and design solutions.
- Coordinate project activities to ensure alignment with scope, schedules, and operational objectives.
- Communicate project updates, design recommendations, and technical information to clients and internal teams.
- Assist in resolving design challenges and support project teams in meeting deadlines and quality expectations.
- Manage priorities and workload independently while working within a hybrid environment.
- Contribute to larger and more complex utility development projects, including commercial sites and multi-unit residential communities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by sharing feedback on design processes, workflows, and technology tools.
- Maintain a high standard of reliability, accuracy, and professionalism across all project assignments.
- 2 to 5 years of experience in electric and/or gas utility distribution design.
- Experience supporting projects within the PEPCO service territory and familiarity with PEPCO standards and procedures.
- Hands-on experience using Geographic Work Designer (GWD).
- Proficiency with MicroStation or similar CAD software used for utility design and drafting.
- Experience developing utility distribution designs for residential and commercial development projects.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage deadlines effectively in a hybrid work setting.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering teams, utility stakeholders, clients, and project staff.
- Proven problem-solving abilities and the capability to identify and resolve design-related issues.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to producing quality work.
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design, or a related field.
- Direct experience working within PEPCO proprietary systems and processes.
- Strong familiarity with PEPCO territory and utility infrastructure requirements.
- Experience using AS8 (Asset Suite 8) for utility asset and work management.
- Background supporting gas distribution system projects.
- Experience with AutoCAD or other CAD platforms in addition to MicroStation.
- Previous client-facing experience, including discussing technical designs and responding to project-related questions.
- Interest in professional growth within a fast-paced engineering and utility environment.
This position follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week in the office and two days working remotely. The primary office is located in White Marsh, Maryland, with future opportunities to support operations closer to PEPCO-served areas.

Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of White Marsh, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $32.00 - $35.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
