Job Description

The Mechanical Design Engineer plays a key role in the design and development of electrical systems and mechanical components for prefabricated control and switchgear buildings, UL 891 switchboards, metal-clad medium voltage switchgear, UL 1008 transfer switches, UL 414 metering enclosures, UL 508A control panels, and related power distribution products. This position focuses on low- and medium-voltage power distribution and control systems, requiring strong knowledge of industry standards and the ability to manage projects from concept through production release while ensuring compliance with codes, standards, and customer requirements.

Responsibilities Include

  • Design and develop electrical and mechanical systems for prefabricated control and switchgear buildings, switchboards, transfer switches, metering enclosures, control panels, and related products.
  • Lead mechanical system design from concept through release, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client specifications.
  • Develop detailed electrical drawings, schematics, and layouts using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical in both 2D and 3D formats.
  • Select and specify electrical components and materials, and manage bills of materials (BOM) for accuracy and timely release to operations.
  • Coordinate design requirements with suppliers, internal engineering teams, and sales to resolve technical issues and support project objectives.
  • Optimize designs for efficiency, reliability, manufacturability, cost-effectiveness, and market competitiveness.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining high quality, safety, and performance standards.
  • Provide technical support to customers during start-up, troubleshooting, and warranty periods.
  • Participate in and conduct design reviews, prototype testing, and validation activities with test teams.
  • Maintain complete and accurate design documentation, including version control and as-built updates throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Apply knowledge of UL, NEC, IEC, and other relevant industry standards in all design work.
  • Incorporate sheet metal design principles into product designs for enclosures and structural components.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience in electrical and mechanical design for low- or medium-voltage power distribution and control systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems and components, including applicable industry standards such as UL, NEC, and IEC.
  • Familiarity with electrical codes, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in developing 2D and 3D electrical drawings and schematics using AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Hands-on sheet metal design experience for enclosures and related mechanical structures.
  • Ability to manage projects from initial concept through production release while maintaining compliance and documentation.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and customers to resolve technical issues.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with additional design software such as Revit and Inventor.
  • Prior experience in electrical project management, including coordination of schedules, resources, and deliverables.
  • Experience designing custom power distribution and control equipment for industrial, utility, commercial, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Ability to optimize designs for performance, reliability, and cost in a competitive market environment.
Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bedford, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.00 - $60.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
