Job Description

This position focuses on welding and fabricating carbon steel pipe and vessel products using open root MIG and flux core processes. The role involves working with pipe ranging from 1" to 23" outer diameter and wall thicknesses between 1/4" and 1/2", as well as vessel-like products and silencers. The welder will perform fit-up work, read and interpret blueprints, and complete precise welds and fabrications on a variety of carbon steel components.

Responsibilities

  • Weld carbon steel pipe ranging from 1" to 23" outer diameter with wall thicknesses between 1/4" and 1/2" using open root MIG and flux core processes.
  • Weld and fabricate vessel-like products and silencers, ensuring high-quality welds and structural integrity.
  • Perform welding on valve product lines, including preheating material, welding grooves with MIG and flux core, backgouging, and refilling grooves to specification.
  • Fit shells together and assemble components such as lifting supports, legs, caps, flanges, and nozzles onto rolled plate and pipe.
  • Bevel and square up material accurately in preparation for welding and fabrication.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and welding drawings to complete jobs according to design and specification.
  • Perform basic math calculations to verify measurements, dimensions, and material requirements.
  • Execute backgouging operations safely and effectively to ensure proper weld penetration and quality.
  • Conduct pipe and vessel welding and fabrication on carbon steel materials using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow established safety procedures and shop practices.
  • Work extended hours, including overtime and some weekends, to meet production demands and workload requirements.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of welding experience, including extensive hands-on work with MIG and flux core processes.
  • Proficiency in open root MIG welding and flux core welding on carbon steel pipe and vessel components.
  • Demonstrated ability to weld carbon steel pipe in the 1" to 20" range and vessel-type products.
  • Strong fabrication skills, including fitting, assembling, and welding structural and pressure-containing components.
  • Ability to perform backgouging operations and refill grooves to meet quality and specification requirements.
  • Experience welding and fabricating carbon steel materials in a production or shop environment.
  • Competence in reading and interpreting prints and welding drawings accurately.
  • Ability to perform basic math to calculate dimensions, fit-ups, and material requirements.
  • Skill in fitting shells, supports, legs, caps, flanges, and nozzles onto rolled plate and pipe.
  • Capability to bevel and square up material precisely in preparation for welding.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to perform fitting work independently, including complex fit-ups on pipe and vessel components.
  • Experience with additional welding processes such as TIG, sub arc, or stick welding.
  • Comfort working in a high-output environment with substantial overtime requirements.
  • Adaptability to work on a variety of product lines, including silencers, valve components, and vessel-type products.

Work Environment

The role is based in a clean, air-conditioned shop environment designed for comfort and productivity. This is an open-ended contract position expected to run through the end of the year and likely well into next year, depending on workload. The schedule is a day shift from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with some Sundays as needed. Candidates must be comfortable working 60+ hours per week and following a schedule that may involve 13 consecutive workdays followed by 1 day off during busy periods. Work is performed in a fabrication and welding setting with appropriate tools and equipment for MIG, flux core, and other welding processes.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
