Job Description

The Inventory Manager oversees inventory operations across all Richmond production facilities and warehouses, providing leadership and strategic direction for inventory accuracy, cycle counting, inventory reconciliation, material flow, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role leads Inventory Supervisors and an Inventory Process Engineer while establishing standardized inventory management practices across the organization. The Inventory Manager serves as the primary owner of inventory accuracy and control processes, designing, implementing, and continually improving the systems that govern inventory flow throughout the supply chain. The position works closely with Purchasing, Receiving, Production, Engineering, Finance, and Sales to optimize material movement, eliminate waste, improve inventory performance, and support company growth.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the inventory function through Inventory Supervisors and operations leaders across all Richmond facilities and warehouses.
  • Build and develop a high-performing inventory organization through coaching, clear accountability, and ongoing employee development.
  • Own and administer cycle counting programs and inventory reconciliation activities for all sites.
  • Establish, document, and maintain site-wide inventory control standards, procedures, and best practices.
  • Drive improvements in inventory accuracy through root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing, Receiving, Production, Engineering, Finance, and Sales to resolve long-term inventory issues and develop inventory strategies that balance accuracy, material availability, and operational efficiency.
  • Plan and lead annual physical inventory activities, including preparation, execution, and follow-up.
  • Monitor inventory KPIs, analyze performance trends, and lead initiatives to improve inventory performance across facilities.
  • Partner with Receiving and Purchasing leadership to improve inventory-related processes and ensure alignment with supply chain objectives.
  • Ensure consistent inventory practices and standard processes are implemented and followed across all facilities and warehouses.
  • Take ownership of inventory movement and transfer processes between facilities, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Design and continuously improve material flow between suppliers, receiving, warehouses, storage locations, and production operations.
  • Drive process improvements and efficiencies in inventory management and material flow, leveraging continuous improvement and industrial engineering principles.
  • Lead warehouse layout, storage optimization, and material handling initiatives to support operational growth, inventory accuracy, and labor efficiency.
  • Develop and implement inventory storage strategies that support scalability, accuracy, and efficient use of space and labor.
  • Create and maintain standard work for inventory transactions, cycle counting activities, material movement, and warehouse operations.
  • Utilize work measurement techniques to establish labor standards and workload expectations for inventory operations.
  • Evaluate staffing requirements and organizational structure based on inventory workload, facility needs, and operational demands.
  • Lead inventory-related audits and compliance activities, ensuring adherence to internal policies and external requirements.
  • Participate in personnel actions, performance management, and development plans for inventory team members.
  • Identify and develop future inventory leaders and succession plans within the department.
  • Partner with Supply Chain leadership on organizational initiatives and long-term inventory strategy.
  • Close gaps between warehouse operations, production, and inventory management through hands-on engagement and cross-functional collaboration.

Essential Skills

  • Strong leadership and team management abilities, with experience developing and managing team members.
  • Experience in inventory management, warehouse operations, and cycle counting procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to bridge warehouse operations, production activities, and inventory management.
  • Experience leading continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization projects.
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing, work measurement, process mapping, root cause analysis, and standard work principles.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems and inventory management software.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and reporting tools, including accurate data entry and analysis.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a consistent commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities effectively in a dynamic environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, or equivalent experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in production, manufacturing, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with logistics support and inventory control.
  • Customer support and customer service experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude, including mechanical assembly and ability to interpret blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting as required in warehouse and production environments.
  • Experience with packaging, assembly line work, and sealing processes.
  • Positive and ambitious attitude with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

Work Environment

This role is based at a Richmond-area production and warehouse location, with a standard schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The facilities are very clean and climate-controlled, providing a comfortable and organized environment for both office and warehouse activities. The work setting includes collaboration with production lines, warehouses, and receiving areas, and may involve occasional heavy lifting and interaction with mechanical assembly, packaging, and material handling equipment. Flexibility around the primary location may be discussed, and the environment emphasizes safety, efficiency, and well-structured processes supported by modern inventory and ERP systems.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Richmond, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $90000.00 - $110000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
