Duration: 06-12 Months with possible extension
Job Summary
This is an entry-level position for an Archaeologist. Developmental assignments are designed to familiarize the incumbent with applicable regulations, cultural resource requirements, and land-use actions. Progressively more difficult assignments will be provided to develop the competency required for advancement to Archaeologist, Senior.
The position determines whether an office review is adequate or whether field reconnaissance or survey is necessary. The Archaeologist makes recommendations for cultural resource clearance and assists with archaeological reconnaissance to identify archaeological resources that could potentially be impacted by proposed projects or activities.
The role involves the ability to stratify project or activity areas into sampling units, both horizontally across the ground surface and vertically through subsurface testing. The Archaeologist also assists with laboratory analysis and evaluation of archaeological specimens recovered during reconnaissance and uses the resulting data to prepare archaeological reports.
Laboratory analysis and evaluation involve the identification and classification of archaeological specimens, as well as making deductions regarding how the specimens were used. The position requires analytical and deductive skills to produce anthropological data, which is subsequently used in the preparation of archaeological reports.
Education and Experience / Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements / Other Requirements
A postgraduate degree in Anthropology, with a specialization in Prehistory, or an equivalent degree in Archaeology or a closely related field is required.
