Substitute Teacher
Job Description
Exploris is a long-standing and award-winning independent public charter school in downtown Raleigh that uses innovative teaching models such as co-teaching, project-based learning, and standards-based grading. We pride ourselves on our core values of Innovation, Relationships, Social Empowerment, Curiosity, Craftsmanship, Responsibility, Connections to Nature, and Reflection, and we use downtown resources and community partners to help connect our scholars to real-world issues.
Exploris prides itself on the commitment, compassion, talent, and expertise of the people who work here. Parents choose to send their children to Exploris because they know their children will be taught by individuals who go above and beyond for the sake of student learning and who develop strong relationships with their students.
Job Description: Substitute teachers play a key role in maintaining safety and continuity of instruction when the teacher of record must be absent. At Exploris, substitute teachers may work as part of a co-teaching team in a classroom or may support smaller groups or individual students in Global Arts classes, intervention groups, or specialized instructional groups. Since Exploris students often go off campus for lunch, recess, and field experiences, Exploris substitute teachers should be prepared to walk with their team and students several blocks at a time, up to a mile or more a day, unless other accommodations are requested.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Remain attentive and focused on your students at all times, actively monitoring them and avoiding activities such as reading, using cell phones, or working on laptops that take attention away from them.
Protect student privacy in accordance with state and federal law. As a substitute teacher, you will learn names, grades, behavior issues, and information about students’ personal lives, academic performance, and medical diagnoses. This information should never leave school or be discussed with others.
Follow the teacher’s lesson plans and the state standards while maintaining neutrality when discussing political, religious, and social beliefs and issues.
Be compassionate, positive, enthusiastic, and professional in your interactions with students, other staff members, families, and the community.
Assist in Classroom Management by engaging with students and actively moving around the room while students are working.
Accompany students off campus as directed by the instruction and activities planned for the day. Exploris staff members dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather outside and for walking.
Exploris Substitute Teachers participate in a dedicated training program to orient them to our school, our teams, and our students as part of their onboarding process.
Additional duties as assigned.
