Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Project Manager – AMI / Smart Utilities to lead the field execution of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart utility deployment projects.
This position will oversee onsite construction and installation activities across assigned utility territories, with responsibility for subcontractor management, field operations, project scheduling, safety, quality, productivity, and cost control. The Project Manager will work closely with engineering, operations, project leadership, utility stakeholders, subcontractors, and field crews to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget.
The ideal candidate brings a strong background in utility construction, AMI deployment, meter installation programs, or large-scale infrastructure projects, along with demonstrated experience managing multiple field crews and subcontractors.
Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead onsite construction activities associated with AMI deployments, including meter installation, communications infrastructure, and supporting electrical work.
- Manage daily field operations across multiple crews, work locations, and assigned utility territories.
- Conduct regular site visits, field inspections, and audits to monitor construction progress, workmanship, quality, and compliance.
- Oversee subcontractors, installation crews, and field vendors performing AMI-related work.
- Establish and enforce expectations for subcontractor productivity, safety, quality, schedule performance, and contractual compliance.
- Review subcontractor schedules, work plans, daily production reports, and field performance.
- Enforce applicable contract requirements, scopes of work, and service-level agreements.
- Identify and resolve field issues, conflicts, performance gaps, and construction challenges in real time.
- Assist in developing and maintaining detailed construction schedules, installation sequencing plans, and resource requirements.
- Identify potential schedule risks and implement appropriate mitigation strategies to maintain project milestones.
- Track key production metrics, including meters installed per day, route completion, crew productivity, and overall project progress, adjusting resources as necessary.
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture consistent with company requirements and OSHA standards.
- Ensure project activities comply with applicable utility regulations, permitting requirements, environmental standards, and contractual obligations.
- Review project invoices and subcontractor payment applications in coordination with the Senior Project Manager.
- Partner closely with engineering, operations, project leadership, customers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to support successful project execution.
- Travel to customer and project sites as required to support field operations.
- Perform additional project management and operational duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in utility construction, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) deployment, or infrastructure project delivery.
- Experience supporting or managing meter installation programs, preferably involving electric, gas, or water utilities.
- Proven experience managing large-scale field operations, subcontractors, installation crews, and/or field vendors.
- Demonstrated ability to make effective field decisions and resolve construction and operational issues.
- Strong understanding of project scheduling, field productivity, quality control, and construction execution.
- Strong client-facing, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with project management tools and construction scheduling software.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
- Strong verbal, written, technical communication, and presentation skills.
- Valid driver's license in good standing issued by the candidate's state of residence.
- OSHA 30 – Construction certification is required at the time of application.
- Ability to travel to customer and project sites as needed to support operations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience managing AMI or smart utility deployments.
- Experience with electric, gas, and/or water meter installation programs.
- Advanced knowledge of construction scheduling platforms such as Primavera P6 and Microsoft Project.
- Professional certification such as PMP, CEM, CMVP, or LEED AP.
- PMP or equivalent project management certification is strongly preferred.
- Experience coordinating geographically dispersed crews and subcontractors across multiple project locations or utility territories.
