Job Description
The Mechanical Drafter creates and modifies detailed drawings for architectural and mechanical products using AutoCAD and Inventor. Approximately 90% of the day is spent producing and updating drawings, while the remaining time is dedicated to collaborating with the design and engineering team. The role focuses primarily on modifying existing drawing templates and supporting the design of dampers, screens, HVAC components, solar shading, decorative bar grills, decorative metals, architectural louvers, and shades for large buildings and skyscraper projects. This position plays a key role in preparing submittal and fabrication drawings and ensuring that designs are accurate, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Design products that meet the design intent and conform to established manufacturing norms and standards.
- Prepare clear and accurate submittal drawings for customers using AutoCAD.
- Create fabrication drawings for the factory using AutoCAD or Inventor to support efficient production.
- Develop detailed parts drawings and extrusion profiles using AutoCAD or Inventor.
- Prepare comprehensive Bills of Material to support purchasing, planning, and manufacturing activities.
- Modify existing drawing templates to reflect project-specific requirements and product variations.
- Collaborate with the design and engineering team to clarify requirements, resolve design issues, and ensure alignment with project specifications.
- Apply sound mechanical drafting and detailing practices to architectural and HVAC-related components.
- Use Microsoft Excel and other office software to organize data, track information, and support documentation.
- Perform other similar or related drafting and design duties as required to support project and team objectives.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design or mechanical drafting.
- A minimum of 1–2 years of hands-on work experience with AutoCAD 2D.
- Strong proficiency in mechanical drafting and detailing for sheet metal, HVAC components, and architectural products.
- Ability to use computer software effectively, with a focus on Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience working with CAD tools in a professional drafting or design environment.
- Associate degree or trade school education related to CAD, mechanical drafting, or a closely related field.
- Ability to interpret and translate design intent into accurate, manufacturable drawings.
- Solid understanding of basic mechanical design principles and how mechanical systems interact with building systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD 3D is a plus.
- Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor is highly desirable.
- Exposure to SolidWorks and other 3D CAD platforms is a plus.
- Experience with civil or architectural drafting and design tools such as Revit or MicroStation is beneficial.
- Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Technical school or associate-level education is valued, with emphasis placed more on practical work experience than formal education.
- Interest in mechanical systems and how they integrate with building systems, particularly in large-scale and high-rise projects.
Work Environment
This role operates in a professional office and design environment with extensive use of CAD software, including AutoCAD (primarily 2D, with potential 3D), Autodesk Inventor, and other drafting and design tools. Work is largely computer-based, with most of the day spent at a workstation creating and modifying drawings and coordinating with design and engineering colleagues. Optional overtime is available, up to approximately 10 hours per week, providing flexibility for those who want to increase their earnings or support project deadlines. The organization offers two weeks of paid time off and ten paid holidays, along with opportunities to grow into broader design and engineering functions. The team is close-knit with strong tenure, fostering a supportive environment where knowledge is shared and professional development is encouraged. This setting is well-suited for individuals who are passionate about mechanics, enjoy detailed drafting work, and are motivated by seeing how their designs contribute to complex building systems and large architectural projects.
