Job Description
The Accessioner I is responsible for accurately receiving, processing, and cataloging laboratory specimens to support clinical testing and patient diagnosis. This role focuses primarily on blood samples, with occasional handling of other specimen types such as urine or tissue, and plays a critical part in ensuring that laboratory professionals have reliable information for diagnosis and treatment.
Responsibilities
- Receive and triage all incoming specimens for clinical testing, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and prioritization.
- Process specimens according to established laboratory procedures and quality standards.
- Manage and update clinical information within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database with accurate and timely data entry.
- Perform internal audits of clinical charts and related documentation to verify completeness and accuracy.
- Collaborate with various laboratory and clinical departments to ensure testing accuracy and smooth workflow.
- Follow laboratory protocols and safety procedures while handling blood and other biological specimens.
- Work both independently and as part of a team to meet turnaround times and departmental deadlines.
Essential Skills
- 0–2 years of work experience in a laboratory, medical, or specimen processing environment.
- Proven attention to accuracy and detail when handling specimens and entering data.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively.
- Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team-oriented environment.
- Experience with specimen processing and accessioning.
- Proficiency in data entry and working with laboratory or medical information systems.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- AS or BS degree in biological sciences preferred.
- Background in laboratory or medical settings is beneficial.
- Familiarity with laboratory workflows and clinical testing processes.
- Comfort working primarily with blood specimens and occasionally with urine or tissue samples.
Work Environment
This role is based in a laboratory setting and involves working with blood and other biological specimens under established safety and quality protocols. The schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The environment is structured, process-driven, and collaborative, with a focus on accuracy, timely specimen processing, and effective communication across departments.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brentwood, TN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $18.50 - $18.55/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
