Job Title: Fiber Installation Technician – Data Center
Job Description
This role focuses on installing and routing fiber optic cabling and pathway systems such as innerduct, MaxCell, and microfiber in a fast-paced, high-security data center environment. You will support large-scale data center projects by managing fiber installation activities across indoor data halls and outdoor campus and underground pathways, ensuring all work meets strict safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Install and route fiber optic cable, innerduct, conduit, and pathway systems throughout the data center campus and underground infrastructure.
- Safely pull and secure cabling through manholes, handholes, cable vaults, and conduit systems while maintaining proper cable handling practices.
- Read and interpret cable maps, riser diagrams, construction drawings, and work instructions to execute installation plans accurately.
- Ensure all installations comply with company standards, project specifications, and safety requirements.
- Label and document installed fiber and pathways, maintaining accurate records of completed work and changes in the field.
- Collaborate closely with project teams, including installers, splicers, and construction crews, to meet timelines and coordinate work sequences.
- Perform quality inspections and quality control checks on installed cabling and pathway systems.
- Apply technical knowledge of pulling tension, bend radius, and cable management to protect fiber integrity.
- Work safely in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, and high-security areas while following strict safety protocols.
- Maintain site cleanliness standards and contribute to a safe, organized work environment.
- Adapt to varying weather conditions and project demands, including overtime, to support schedule requirements.
Essential Skills
- 1–3 years of fiber installation experience, preferably in outside plant (OSP) or data center environments.
- Hands-on experience installing, pulling, and routing fiber optic cable in conduit, innerduct, and pathway systems such as MaxCell.
- Proficiency with cable pulling tools and equipment used in fiber installation and pathway construction.
- Ability to read and interpret cable maps, riser diagrams, and construction drawings.
- Strong understanding of pulling tension, bend radius, and proper cable management for fiber optic cabling.
- Capability to work safely in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, manholes, and other restricted areas.
- Physical readiness for demanding tasks, including standing, climbing, and lifting throughout the workday.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in secure environments and varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license.

Work Environment
The position is based in a fast-paced, high-security data center environment where badge access is required. Work is a mix of indoor data hall activities and outdoor campus and underground pathway tasks, including time in mechanical rooms, cable vaults, manholes, and other confined spaces. The role is physically active, involving standing, climbing, and lifting throughout the day. The typical schedule averages around 50 hours per week, with overtime as needed to meet project timelines. You will work in varying weather conditions when outdoors and in a team-oriented setting with close coordination between installers, splicers, and construction crews. Strict safety protocols and site cleanliness standards are consistently enforced.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $45.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
