Job Description
Make a meaningful difference supporting students as a Sign Language Interpreter during the 2026/2027 school year. This rewarding contract position offers opportunities to work with students in a dynamic school environment, promoting access and inclusion for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners. You’ll be based at one of several welcoming campuses, including May River High School, Bluffton Middle School, Robert Smalls Leadership Academy, or Battery Creek High School.
In this full-time role, you’ll use your interpreting expertise to facilitate communication, enabling students to engage fully with their classwork and peers. Your skills will be essential in creating a positive, supportive learning experience.
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- Valid certification as a Sign Language Interpreter
- Minimum 3.5 EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) score required
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) as well as interpreting in educational settings
- Experience providing interpreting services in a K-12 environment strongly preferred
- Ability to work collaboratively with educators, support staff, and students
- Strong sense of professionalism, discretion, and cultural competence
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret classroom instruction, discussions, activities, and events for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing
- Support access to both academic and extracurricular activities
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure effective communication access
- Adhere to professional ethical standards and maintain student confidentiality
- Respond to individual student needs and adjust interpreting approaches as necessary
