The Hematology Supervisor (night shift) is a full-time, on-site role responsible for overseeing nightly hematology laboratory operations. This position manages staffing and workflow, ensures strict adherence to quality and safety protocols, and maintains compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards. The supervisor reviews and verifies test results, troubleshoots instrumentation issues, ensures proper sample handling, and supports continuous improvement in testing quality, data handling, and reporting. The role also focuses on training and mentoring hematology technologists, conducting competency assessments, monitoring turnaround times, and coordinating with other departments to resolve testing and reporting issues during night operations.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee nightly hematology laboratory operations, including staffing, workflow management, and coordination of testing activities.
  • Review, verify, and approve hematology test results to ensure accuracy, reliability, and timely reporting.
  • Ensure proper sample handling, preparation, and processing in accordance with established clinical laboratory protocols.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and validate hematology analyzers and related laboratory instrumentation.
  • Monitor turnaround times and adjust workflow or staffing as needed to meet service and performance expectations.
  • Maintain strict compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other relevant regulatory and accreditation standards, with a strong focus on documentation and quality assurance.
  • Implement and oversee quality control practices, including review of QC data and corrective actions when necessary.
  • Train, mentor, and support hematology technologists and night shift staff, including conducting competency assessments and providing performance feedback.
  • Manage staff scheduling for the night shift, ensuring adequate coverage and efficient utilization of personnel.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance testing quality, efficiency, data handling, and reporting procedures.
  • Support internal and external audits and inspections, particularly those related to night operations and hematology services.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and other departments to resolve testing and reporting issues and ensure seamless patient care.
  • Use laboratory information systems and computer applications for data entry, result reporting, and documentation of laboratory activities.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accuracy, and clinical excellence within the hematology laboratory during night shifts.
  • Address and help resolve conflicts or operational challenges among night shift staff in a professional and constructive manner.
Essential Skills
  • 4–6 years of clinical hematology experience with prior supervisory or lead technologist responsibilities.
  • Strong hematology laboratory expertise, including test performance, result interpretation, and quality control practices.
  • Hands-on experience in a CLIA-regulated clinical laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with hematology bench work and laboratory instrumentation, including operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and validation of hematology analyzers.
  • Knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and other relevant regulatory requirements, with an emphasis on compliance and thorough documentation.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including staff scheduling, training, performance feedback, and conflict resolution.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems and basic computer skills for data entry, reporting, and documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and night shift staff.
  • Ability to work reliably during night shifts while maintaining high standards of accuracy, safety, and professionalism.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
  • MLS/MT or MLT certification (ASCP or equivalent) preferred.
  • Previous experience in hematology and laboratory supervision or lead technologist roles strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with hospital-based clinical laboratories and blood-related testing.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in testing quality, data handling, and reporting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Rahway, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $90000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
