Job Title: General Production Laborer

Job Description

The General Production Laborer plays a key role in preparing and maintaining concrete beds for precast concrete production. You work hands-on with materials, hand tools, and power tools, ensuring accurate placement of frames and rebar while supporting a high-performance team in a busy plant environment. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys physically demanding work, outdoor conditions, and contributing directly to the success of daily production goals.

Responsibilities

  • Stand and work on your feet for approximately 9 to 10 hours per day to support continuous production operations.
  • Lift and carry materials weighing 20 to 40 pounds consistently throughout the shift.
  • Read work orders and accurately interpret measurements using a tape measure to ensure proper layout and placement.
  • Operate hand tools such as sanders, grinders, scrapers, trowels, wrenches, tweezers, and pliers to prepare and finish concrete beds and related components.
  • Prepare concrete beds for laying precast concrete, including setting up the work area and organizing materials.
  • Ensure frames are correctly placed and aligned using a tape measure to meet quality and specification standards.
  • Collaborate closely with team members to clean and maintain the concrete beds and surrounding work areas.
  • Bend up and down frequently to move, position, and measure rebar and other materials as needed.
  • Pull and position rebar correctly to help prevent cracking or breaking of concrete products.
  • Scrape off unwanted product and residue from concrete beds as needed to maintain clean surfaces for production.
  • Follow construction-related communication and directions in a high-performance, metrics-driven environment.
  • Support production goals by maintaining pace, quality, and safety standards throughout each shift.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in general production, construction, or landscaping environments.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move continuously for up to 10 hours per day.
  • Capability to lift and carry 20 to 40 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and work orders to follow specifications accurately.
  • Comfort working with hand tools and power tools such as grinders, sanders, scrapers, trowels, wrenches, tweezers, and pliers.
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in dirty, dusty, and outdoor conditions.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to handle fast-paced, high-performance metrics.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in carpentry, remodeling, and finishing work.
  • Knowledge of heavy landscaping practices and outdoor labor.
  • Experience in construction labor, including concrete or precast work.
  • Ability to understand and participate in construction-related communication and terminology.
  • Comfort working in a large plant environment with seasoned and multi-generational employees.

Why Work Here?

You join an employee-owned organization that invests in its people through front-loaded vacation after 60 days, competitive health benefits, and participation in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), allowing you to earn company stock based on your years of service. Team members enjoy free lunches from visiting food trucks twice a month, regular pay increases after hire, and yearly wage reviews that reward strong performance. A scheduling attainment bonus offers additional earning potential based on achieving weekly production goals, providing a meaningful incentive for reliable attendance and contribution to team success.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large precast concrete plant operating year-round in Des Moines, Iowa, with a contract-to-hire structure and defined hours required for conversion. The primary shift starts around 6:00 a.m., with typical schedules such as 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., though you should expect to work until the day’s production is complete, often 9 to 10 hours and occasionally as late as 5:30 p.m. The environment is very dirty and dusty due to a dirt-based yard and frequent movement of product, with some concrete beds located under partial cover and many others fully exposed outdoors. You must be willing to work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation, as the facility runs year-round with only slight slowing in winter. The plant is large, with seasoned and multi-generational employees, and emphasizes high-performance metrics, safety, and clear construction-related communication. Typical attire is durable, work-appropriate clothing suitable for dirty, dusty, and outdoor construction conditions, along with appropriate personal protective equipment provided or required by the facility.
