Job Description
This role is a hands-on position in a metal fabrication department, operating a variety of manual and automatic equipment and performing manual MIG welding on steel and stainless steel parts. You start by working with the machines and processes you already know, then gradually cross-train on additional equipment and welding. Once fully trained, welding will make up approximately 30–40% of your daily responsibilities. Success in this role requires strong measurement skills, the ability to read and interpret blueprints, and consistent attention to quality and tolerances.
Responsibilities- Operate manual and automatic saws, drill presses, punch presses, shears, angle benders, sanders, and polishers to produce steel and stainless steel parts.
- Perform manual MIG welding on steel and stainless steel components, with welding responsibilities growing to 30–40% of the role once fully trained.
- Start on equipment and processes that match your current experience and progressively train on additional machines and welding tasks.
- Read and interpret blueprints to understand part specifications, dimensions, and fabrication requirements.
- Read tape measures accurately to the 1/16 of an inch and apply precise measurements during cutting, drilling, punching, bending, and welding operations.
- Follow paper cut sheets and work instructions to complete jobs in the correct sequence and to the required specifications.
- Utilize computers for documentation, including job tracking, quality records, and production reporting.
- Perform 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, and subsequent piece inspections using tape measures, levels, and protractors to verify dimensional accuracy and alignment.
- Hold and maintain tolerances of +/- 0.5 consistently across parts and batches.
- Support basic machine setup and, once trained, change dies and tooling as needed to run different jobs.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area in the metal fabrication shop and follow all safety procedures and guidelines.
- Collaborate with teammates and communicate clearly about job status, quality issues, and equipment needs.
- Experience working in a non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility.
- Experience operating saws, punch presses, drill presses, benders, and similar fabrication equipment, OR MIG welding experience, OR completion of an AWS new graduate program.
- Ability to read a tape measure accurately to the 1/16 of an inch.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints for metal fabrication work.
- Ability to follow paper cut sheets and written work instructions.
- Ability to utilize computers for documentation and basic data entry.
- Ability to perform 1st, 5th, 10th, 20th, and subsequent piece inspections using tape measures, levels, and protractors.
- Ability to consistently hold tolerances of +/- 0.5.
- Reliable work ethic and willingness to learn additional machines and welding processes.
- MIG welding experience on steel and/or stainless steel.
- AWS or other formal welding certifications.
- Mechanical aptitude to change dies and tooling once trained.
- Comfort working on your feet for the full duration of a shift in a manufacturing environment.
- Attention to detail and strong commitment to quality and safety.
- Ability to work occasional overtime on Fridays and rare Saturdays when production requires.

Work EnvironmentThe role is based in a metal fabrication shop within a manufacturing facility that is not climate controlled, so temperatures will reflect seasonal weather conditions. You will work on 1st shift, Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with overtime on Fridays as needed and rare additional hours on Saturdays if ever required. The schedule includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch and two paid 15-minute breaks. You will stand for most of the shift while operating saws, drill presses, punch presses, shears, benders, sanders, polishers, and performing manual MIG welding. The environment is hands-on and equipment-driven, with an emphasis on safety, quality, and efficient production.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elkhart, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $19.50 - $19.50/hr.
