Job Title: Mechanical Design Drafter
Job Description
This role focuses on designing and drafting detailed drawings and documentation to support manufacturing and product development. You will manage design and drafting projects from concept through completion, create and revise 2D and 3D models and drawings, and provide practical design solutions for new products and product changes. The position requires close collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure designs are feasible, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
Responsibilities
- Manage design and drafting projects from initial concept through to completion, ensuring deliverables meet quality and timeline expectations.
- Provide design solutions for new product development projects and product change requests, incorporating functional, manufacturability, and cost considerations.
- Prepare comprehensive product documentation, including system and component models, installation, layout, weldment, and assembly drawings, piece-part drawings, and isometric drawings.
- Check and verify dimensions of parts, materials to be used, the relationship of one part to another, and the relationship of various parts to the overall structure.
- Utilize red-lined drawings, engineering change requests, and written instructions to prepare revised drawings that accurately incorporate dimensional changes and updated technical data.
- Apply knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, and physical sciences to develop accurate and reliable drawings.
- Use computer-assisted design tools and CAD software (2D and 3D) to create, modify, and maintain models and drawings.
- Interact regularly with engineering and manufacturing personnel to resolve issues that arise during the manufacturing process and to document corrective actions.
- Participate in design reviews to assess the feasibility of proposed designs and provide recommendations for product improvement and optimization.
- Support documentation related to bills of materials and other product data as needed for manufacturing and lifecycle management.
- Perform other design and drafting duties as assigned to support project and departmental objectives.
Essential Skills
- 2–5 years of on-the-job CAD experience, with a strong focus on 3D modeling.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) tools, including 2D and 3D CAD software.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and SolidWorks for mechanical design and drafting.
- Proven experience as an individual contributor, owning projects, products, and design deliverables.
- Strong understanding of common materials used in sheet metal enclosures.
- Knowledge of common mechanical assembly processes, including hardware selection, fasteners, riveting, and welding.
- Ability to prepare and manage bills of materials (BOM) and related product documentation.
- Familiarity with design for manufacturing (DFM) principles in a production environment.
- Experience working with ERP and MRP systems, including material management and routing information.
- Exposure to SAP or similar enterprise resource planning tools.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot and resolve design and production issues.
- Solid foundation in engineering practices, mathematics, and physical sciences relevant to mechanical design.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with design in a manufacturing environment, particularly for mechanical or HVAC-related products.
- Expereince in sheet metal design for manufacturing, including enclosure and structural components.
- ERP/MRP experience related to bills of materials, material setup, material management, and routing processes.
- Experience in design work for refrigeration systems within a manufacturing context.
- Familiarity with HVAC manufacturing processes and requirements.
- Knowledge of product lifecycle management (PLM) systems and processes.
- Knowledge of product data management (PDM) tools and methodologies.
- Understanding of HVAC and air-conditioning equipment installations and related environmental considerations.
- Interest in professional growth and advancement within a high-growth organization.
Work Environment
You primarily work in an office environment using CAD software and related design tools. At times, you may need to enter the manufacturing area to gather data, observe production processes, or research and troubleshoot problems; these areas can have higher noise levels and lower air quality compared to the office. You may also be required to document equipment in outdoor or semi-outdoor settings, including environments commonly encountered in air-conditioning equipment installations. Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Frederick, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $82000.00 - $90000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
