Job Description
This role focuses on building advanced composite aircraft parts using precise hand layup techniques and laser-guided ply placement on tooling. You will prepare, assemble, and finish composite components through vacuum bagging, oven and autoclave processes, while following detailed work instructions, blueprints, and customer specifications. The position requires strong attention to detail, accurate documentation, and consistent adherence to safety, quality, and cleanliness standards in a modern manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Build composite parts using appropriate hand layup techniques in accordance with specific work instructions, travelers, and customer specifications.
- Utilize laser systems to accurately lay up plies on tools and ensure correct ply orientation and placement during the layup process.
- Fit and smooth successive layers of materials to achieve a uniform build-up free from wrinkles, air pockets, and voids, following directions and instructions.
- Prepare, vacuum bag, and process parts for room temperature, oven, and autoclave curing, including performing leak tests on vacuum bags.
- Perform in-process inspections as instructed on travelers and as delegated by quality, using precision measuring tools and instruments as required.
- Visually inspect parts for defects prior to bagging and after processing, ensuring that all parts meet quality standards.
- Accurately record time worked on operations through Epicor or similar systems and maintain all required production and quality paperwork.
- Mark identifying information on parts and ensure proper labeling and traceability throughout the manufacturing process.
- Use chemicals, adhesives, and solvents as required for composite layup, bonding, and cleaning, following all safety guidelines.
- Clean and prep bond tools and layup tooling as needed to ensure proper surface condition for composite fabrication.
- Unbag and demold parts after curing, perform necessary cleaning, and restore work areas to a safe and orderly condition.
- Follow established safety and security procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, and contribute to a safe work environment.
- Adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and adjust methods or approaches to best fit changing situations, delays, or unexpected events.
- Maintain neatness and a clean-as-you-go approach to keep work areas foreign object and debris (FOD) free.
- Read and understand blueprints and drawings to interpret part geometry, layup requirements, and tooling details.
- Act in a manner that consistently enhances the integrity and respect of the department and the broader organization.
- Work collaboratively within small team cells of 3–5 people to meet production goals and quality standards.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in hand layup of advanced composite materials on designated tooling.
- Ability to follow detailed work instructions, travelers, and customer specifications for composite layup and processing.
- Proficiency with laser systems or similar tools for accurate ply placement during layup.
- Hands-on experience with vacuum bagging techniques for room temperature, oven, and autoclave processing.
- Capability to perform visual inspection of composite parts and identify defects such as wrinkles, voids, and air pockets.
- Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints and engineering drawings.
- Ability to use precision measuring tools and instruments for in-process inspections.
- Experience with composite materials, including pre-preg layup, trimming, and finishing processes.
- Competence in using chemicals, adhesives, and solvents safely in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording time, production data, and quality documentation.
- Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and FOD-free work area.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently during the workday.
- Frequent ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and to reach with hands and arms.
- Occasional ability to climb or balance and to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequent ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
- Occasional ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Seldom ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Vision capabilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Eligibility to work under ITAR-regulated programs, including meeting applicable work authorization requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in tooling fabrication and tool preparation for composite layup.
- Experience in production or assembly work within aerospace or industrial manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with Epicor or similar manufacturing execution and time-tracking systems.
- Knowledge of precision trimming and advanced layup techniques for composite parts.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision while maintaining high quality and productivity.
- Strong adaptability to frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective teamwork skills and a collaborative mindset when working in small production cells.
- Commitment to acting with integrity and professionalism in all interactions.

Work Environment
The role is based in a large, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility designed for advanced composite production. You will work within team cells of approximately 3–5 people, fostering close collaboration and efficient workflow. The environment supports both first and second shift schedules, Monday through Friday, offering structured hours in a professional setting. Dress is business casual, and the facility emphasizes cleanliness, safety, and adherence to established security procedures while using modern equipment and processes for composite manufacturing.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of LADSON, SC.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
