Job Description

The Quality Inspector – Night Shift plays a key role in ensuring that food-grade containers meet strict quality and safety standards. Working in a climate-controlled lab environment, this position conducts daily quality checks, performs raw material testing, measures product dimensions, gathers samples from production lines, and carries out specialized drop and freezing tests to verify product performance and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily quality inspections on food-grade containers to ensure they meet established standards and specifications.
  • Collect and record quality-related data accurately and consistently for analysis and reporting.
  • Conduct raw material testing to verify that incoming materials meet required quality and safety criteria.
  • Measure product dimensions using tools such as micrometers and calipers to confirm adherence to tolerances.
  • Gather samples from production lines at defined intervals for testing and quality verification.
  • Perform drop tests and freezing tests on products to assess durability and performance under various conditions.
  • Work collaboratively with one other team member in the lab to coordinate testing activities and share findings.
  • Maintain organized records of inspections, test results, and measurements through accurate data entry.
  • Follow all safety, cleanliness, and contamination-control procedures required in a food-grade production environment.
  • Adhere to lab and production floor protocols, including wearing required protective equipment and complying with all equipment handling guidelines.

Essential Skills

  • 1–3 years of experience in quality inspections, preferably in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Hands-on experience using measuring equipment such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Strong data entry skills with the ability to input information accurately and efficiently.
  • Solid understanding of basic quality control and quality inspection principles.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures for testing, sampling, and documentation.
  • Comfort working night shifts on a 2-2-3 schedule from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high quality standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with inspection and quality control processes in a food-grade or similar regulated environment.
  • Experience performing or supporting raw material testing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small lab team and communicate clearly with colleagues.
  • Basic computer proficiency for recording test results and maintaining digital records.
  • Willingness to follow strict contamination-control requirements such as wearing hair nets and beard nets when applicable.

Work Environment

The role is based in a climate-controlled facility and lab environment designed for food-grade production. Team members work the night shift on a 2-2-3 schedule from 6:30 pm to 6:30 am and collaborate closely with one other person in the lab. The production floor and lab require strict adherence to safety and contamination-control standards, including wearing steel-toe footwear, eye protection, and hair nets (and beard nets when applicable). Jewelry is not allowed on the floor to maintain product safety and cleanliness. The environment emphasizes consistent use of measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers, careful handling of samples, and compliance with all safety and quality procedures.

This is a Contract position based out of Portland, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
