The Construction Superintendent oversees day-to-day construction activities on federal and commercial projects, coordinating closely with the Project Manager, subcontractors, vendors, and the Government Contracting Official/Owner. This role ensures that manpower, materials, and equipment are properly planned and deployed, that all work complies with contract documents, safety standards, and quality/security requirements, and that the construction schedule and budget remain on track. The superintendent plays a key role in maximizing productivity, minimizing disruptions and downtime, and maintaining clear communication among all project stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate daily on-site construction activities and serve as the primary field leader for subcontractors and vendors.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to determine and plan manpower, materials, and equipment needs for each phase of the project.
  • Act as the direct liaison with the Government Contracting Official/Owner, maintaining professional communication and providing regular updates on project status.
  • Direct and oversee the work of subcontractors and vendors to ensure strict compliance with contract documents, specifications, and performance requirements.
  • Enforce safety rules and protocols on site, promoting a culture of safety and ensuring adherence to all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Monitor and uphold quality and security requirements throughout the project to meet federal and commercial construction expectations.
  • Track and manage the construction schedule to ensure milestones and deadlines are met in accordance with the project plan.
  • Support budget management efforts by monitoring labor, materials, and equipment costs to keep the project within financial targets.
  • Identify potential disruptions or downtime and implement proactive solutions to eliminate or minimize impact on project progress.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Design Engineers, Estimators, Contract Administrators, administrative staff, field installers, and vendors to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all construction-related trades to evaluate work quality, sequence tasks, and resolve technical issues on site.
  • Use basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Project, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat (preferred), to document project activities, communicate with stakeholders, and support project controls.
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation as required, including reports, logs, and records related to quality control, safety, and progress.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats with internal teams, clients, and government representatives.
  • Demonstrate strong work ethic and leadership, setting expectations for performance and professionalism among the on-site team.
Essential Skills
  • 5–10 years of experience in Federal Government or Commercial Construction work.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple construction projects simultaneously and collaborate with cross-functional teams including Project Managers, Design Engineers, Estimators, Contract Administrators, administrative staff, field installers, and vendors.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction-related trades and how they interact within a project.
  • Basic computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Project, and Excel.
  • Ability to use Adobe Acrobat (experience preferred but not required).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • USACE Quality Control Management certification.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • College degree in a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Experience specifically in federal construction environments is highly valuable.
  • Experience working on commercial construction projects under $5M is beneficial.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with architects, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Comfort working within government contracting frameworks and understanding contract compliance requirements.
  • Capability to support both federal and non-federal project pipelines within a growing regional office.
Work Environment

This position is primarily based on site at a federal installation associated with NIWC in the Charleston area. The superintendent works in an active construction environment, spending most of the time in the field overseeing crews, inspecting work, and coordinating daily activities. The work involves collaboration with office-based project staff and may include visits to both on-base and nearby off-base office locations as the team expands. Projects span federal facilities and commercial sites, with a strong pipeline of ongoing and upcoming work, providing a dynamic and growth-oriented environment. The role requires adherence to all site-specific safety, security, and access protocols typical of federal installations, as well as professional attire appropriate for a construction management setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Hanahan, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
