Job Description
Job Title: Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer

Job Description

This role offers an exciting opportunity for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to lead and execute embedded firmware development for lighting controls, advanced protection, and connected wiring devices. You will design, develop, integrate, and test firmware for resource-constrained microcontrollers used in electrical wiring devices, playing a key role in bringing innovative, connected, and compliant products to market.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the design, development, debugging, and hardware/software integration of embedded firmware solutions for new and existing electrical wiring devices according to product specifications.
  • Actively contribute to hardware design by working across firmware and electronics domains, including interpreting schematics, performing hardware/firmware partitioning, supporting board bring-up, and conducting root-cause debugging of mixed hardware/software issues to ensure optimal wiring-device design.
  • Implement firmware for wiring-device applications such as switches, dimmers, switched receptacles, GFCI and AFCI devices that interface with low-rate wireless networks (IEEE 802.15.4).
  • Use integrated tools to plan, develop, test, and deploy software as part of a single workflow, leveraging platforms such as Azure DevOps or equivalent.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test strategies for embedded firmware and hardware systems, including test plan creation, automated and manual test execution, debugging, and root-cause analysis to verify functionality, reliability, and regulatory compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Work effectively within cross-functional teams by actively communicating, sharing knowledge, and supporting team members to ensure alignment with project objectives and successful outcomes.
  • Coordinate closely with product management, design team members, and system engineering to ensure firmware development efforts align with strategic product development plans and business priorities.
  • Support existing production products through firmware maintenance, field issue resolution, root-cause analysis, and implementation of design changes across the product lifecycle.
  • Prepare and deliver clear presentations and communications of intended designs and project task assignments to team members, and provide concise project status updates to stakeholders.
  • Use artificial intelligence, internet, and web-based resources efficiently and effectively to support development, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer science.
  • At least 5+ years of software design and testing experience working with embedded microprocessor development environments and/or embedded products.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in firmware engineering for new product development.
  • Strong proficiency in C programming with hands-on experience developing and debugging firmware for microcontroller-based systems, including a solid understanding of hardware interaction, peripherals, and low-level system behavior.
  • Demonstrated experience using Azure DevOps or equivalent tools within Agile or Kanban development processes.
  • Ability to understand and work directly with Altium design files, including schematic diagrams, PCB layouts, and PCB assembly drawings.
  • Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design fundamentals, including power, signal integrity, interfaces, and sensors/actuators.
  • Experience with wireless systems such as Zigbee, IEEE 802.15.4, or similar low-rate wireless technologies.
  • Experience working on regulatory or compliance-driven designs, including standards such as UL and FCC.
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, email, and meeting management tools.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively use artificial intelligence, internet, and web-based resources as part of the engineering workflow.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, with the ability to clearly convey technical information.
  • Ability to effectively present and communicate design intent, project tasks, and summarized project status to team members and stakeholders.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with embedded firmware development for lighting controls, advanced protection devices, and connected wiring devices.
  • Background in embedded systems integration, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis across hardware and firmware.
  • Familiarity with microcontroller-based embedded systems, including resource-constrained environments.
  • Experience participating in cross-functional product development teams, collaborating with product management, design, and system engineering.
  • Ability to contribute to the full product lifecycle, from new product development through production support and field issue resolution.
  • Comfort working with mixed hardware/software issues and coordinating board bring-up activities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in both design and test activities.

Work Environment

The role is based in a professional office setting with regular work conducted in engineering laboratories. You will work with embedded development environments, microcontroller-based hardware, test equipment, and PCB design files such as schematics and layouts. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is an integral part of the environment, with frequent technical discussions, design reviews, and project coordination. Standard professional attire is expected in the office, with appropriate lab safety practices observed when working in laboratory spaces.
