Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care in a fast-paced primary care, urgent care, or outpatient clinic environment. The RN utilizes advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and assessment skills to evaluate patient needs, administer medications and treatments, perform diagnostic procedures, and promote positive patient outcomes. This position requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to collaborate with providers and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
The RN serves as a patient advocate and clinical resource while ensuring safe, efficient, and compassionate care throughout the patient visit. The RN must be comfortable working with diverse patient populations and responding appropriately to routine, urgent, and changing clinical needs.
Essential Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and obtain accurate patient histories, vital signs, medication histories, allergies, and other relevant clinical information.
- Assess patients presenting with acute and chronic conditions and identify changes in health status requiring additional evaluation or intervention.
- Provide direct nursing care in a primary care, urgent care, or outpatient clinic environment while following evidence-based clinical practices and established protocols.
- Administer medications, injections, treatments, and therapies safely and accurately within RN scope of practice.
- Administer vaccinations and immunizations according to current clinical guidelines, standing orders, and organizational protocols.
- Screen patients for contraindications, allergies, previous reactions, and other factors prior to vaccine administration.
- Monitor patients following immunizations and appropriately respond to potential adverse reactions or clinical concerns.
- Perform phlebotomy and venipuncture, collect blood and other laboratory specimens, and ensure specimens are properly labeled, processed, and prepared for laboratory testing.
- Perform point-of-care testing (POCT) according to established procedures, including appropriate specimen collection, testing, documentation, and reporting of results.
- Assist providers with examinations, procedures, treatments, diagnostic testing, and other clinical interventions.
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, injections, blood glucose testing, specimen collection, and other nursing procedures as ordered.
- Monitor patient responses to treatments and medications and recognize potential adverse reactions or complications.
- Recognize changes in patient condition and promptly escalate urgent or abnormal findings to the provider or appropriate clinical team member.
- Utilize clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills to prioritize patient needs and determine appropriate interventions within scope of practice.
- Provide patient education regarding medications, treatments, preventive care, immunizations, disease management, follow-up care, and health maintenance.
- Educate patients regarding vaccination benefits, expected reactions, safety precautions, and when to seek additional medical attention.
- Promote preventive healthcare and wellness through patient education, screening, immunization, and health-maintenance activities.
- Collaborate closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical assistants, pharmacists, laboratory personnel, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Coordinate patient care and facilitate appropriate referrals, follow-up appointments, diagnostic testing, and continuity of care.
- Provide compassionate communication and advocate for patient needs, preferences, safety, and overall well-being.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, immunizations, laboratory testing, patient education, and clinical outcomes.
- Utilize electronic medical record (EMR) systems, preferably Epic, to document patient encounters, review clinical information, enter orders/results as appropriate, and maintain accurate patient records.
- Review patient medical histories, medication lists, allergies, laboratory results, and other clinical information within the EMR.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, infection-control standards, and organizational policies.
- Follow appropriate infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, PPE, isolation precautions, and safe handling of specimens and sharps.
- Maintain accurate vaccine and medication documentation, including lot numbers, expiration dates, administration sites, and patient responses when required.
- Safely handle, store, and dispose of medications, vaccines, laboratory specimens, and sharps according to established standards.
- Assist with emergency situations and initiate appropriate interventions while obtaining additional clinical support when necessary.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and efficient clinical environment.
- Participate in quality-improvement initiatives and support evidence-based practices designed to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.
- Maintain current nursing licensure, certifications, and required clinical competencies.
- Perform other nursing and clinical duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
- Minimum of one year of related healthcare experience.
- Previous experience in Primary Care, Urgent Care, Emergency Room, outpatient clinic, or comparable ambulatory care environment strongly preferred.
- Experience with phlebotomy and venipuncture.
- Experience with vaccine and immunization administration.
- Experience performing point-of-care testing (POCT).
- Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems; Epic experience preferred.
- Strong patient assessment, clinical judgment, and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical assistants, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced outpatient environment while managing multiple patients and competing priorities.
- Strong commitment to patient safety, quality care, and excellent customer service.
