Nursery General Manager
Job Description
The Nursery General Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations at our Umatilla, Mt Dora and Zellwood nursery locations, ensuring healthy plant inventory, well-maintained facilities, efficient operations, and a high standard of quality.
This is a hands-on, demanding management position that requires strong leadership, reliability, flexibility, and the ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor environment. The General Manager will work directly with employees and will be actively involved in day-to-day nursery operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations at both nursery locations
- Manage, direct, and coordinate nursery staff
- Coordinate plant care, watering, fertilizing, winterization, and general inventory maintenance
- Maintain nursery grounds, facilities, equipment, and overall appearance
- Coordinate shipping operations and truck loading
- Work closely with employees to ensure orders are prepared and loaded accurately and efficiently
- Assist with general nursery maintenance and operational needs
- Operate propane equipment and other nursery equipment as needed
- Prepare and protect plants and facilities during periods of cold weather
- Work outdoors in hot, humid, and changing weather conditions
- Respond to operational issues and emergencies when necessary
- Maintain high standards for plant quality, safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction
Position Requirements:
This position requires a high level of availability and flexibility. The nursery operates around the needs of the plants, customers, weather, and shipping schedules, so occasional early mornings, late hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-ins may be required.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable working in hot, humid, outdoor conditions, performing physical tasks, managing employees, and stepping in wherever needed to keep operations running smoothly. This is not a desk-only management position. The General Manager is expected to lead by example and be actively involved in the physical and operational aspects of the nursery.
The right candidate will be dependable, hardworking, organized, comfortable managing people, and willing to do what is necessary to keep the nursery operating at a high level.
