Job Description

Job Description
Position: Transportation Driver
Department: Transportation / Childcare Operations
Reports To: Director / Assistant Director
Employment Type: Part-Time / As Scheduled

Position Summary

The Transportation Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, timely, and professional transportation for children enrolled at Phoenix Kids Club (PKC). Drivers transport children between PKC, schools, homes or approved locations, field trips, and other authorized destinations while maintaining the highest standards of child safety and supervision.

Because PKC operates based on the scheduling needs of enrolled families, transportation routes, hours, and assignments may change. Drivers must be dependable, flexible, attentive, and prepared to work assigned routes as scheduled.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Safely operate PKC passenger vans and other authorized company vehicles.
  • Complete assigned morning, afternoon, evening, field-trip, and other transportation routes as scheduled.
  • Arrive on time and be prepared to begin routes at the assigned departure time.
  • Follow all applicable traffic laws and PKC transportation and safety procedures.
  • Maintain constant awareness of surrounding traffic, pedestrians, road conditions, and potential hazards.
  • Ensure every child is properly seated and secured with the appropriate seat belt or safety restraint before the vehicle moves.
  • Maintain appropriate supervision and behavior expectations while children are being transported.
  • Conduct required vehicle checks before and after each route.
  • Physically inspect all rows and seating areas after every route to ensure no child is ever left inside a vehicle.
  • Maintain accurate transportation, attendance, pick-up, drop-off, mileage, and other required records.
  • Verify that children are released only to authorized individuals in accordance with PKC procedures.
  • Immediately report accidents, vehicle damage, mechanical concerns, safety hazards, behavioral incidents, or unusual circumstances to management.
  • Maintain cleanliness and basic organization of assigned vehicles.
  • Keep fuel levels adequate for scheduled routes and notify management of maintenance needs.
  • Follow established school pick-up/drop-off procedures and communicate professionally with school personnel, parents, children, and PKC staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
  • Refrain from texting, unnecessary phone use, eating, or other distracting activities while operating a PKC vehicle.
  • Complete additional transportation-related duties as assigned.
Reliability & Attendance Expectations

Transportation Drivers hold a safety-sensitive and operationally essential position. An unexpected absence or late arrival may leave an entire transportation route without coverage and directly impact children and families.

Drivers are therefore expected to maintain regular and dependable attendance, report to work on time, follow established call-out procedures, and immediately communicate emergencies or circumstances that may prevent them from completing an assigned route.

Repeated tardiness, callouts, missed routes, unsafe driving practices, failure to follow transportation procedures, or other reliability concerns may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
  • Maintain an acceptable driving record and remain legally eligible to operate company vehicles.
  • Successfully complete all required background checks and employment screenings.
  • Meet all applicable state, licensing, insurance, and PKC requirements for transporting children.
  • Demonstrate safe, defensive, and attentive driving habits.
  • Be able to follow GPS directions, written routes, schedules, and verbal instructions.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from the PKC facility.
  • Be dependable, punctual, professional, and able to communicate effectively.
  • Be comfortable supervising children ages 3–13 while maintaining appropriate boundaries and expectations.
  • Be able to respond calmly and appropriately during emergencies or unexpected transportation situations.
Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Safely enter and exit passenger vans repeatedly throughout a shift.
  • Sit and drive for extended periods.
  • Bend, reach, walk, stand, and perform vehicle safety inspections.
  • Assist children entering and exiting vehicles when necessary.
  • Safely perform duties associated with emergency evacuation or other transportation emergencies.
Schedule & Flexibility

Phoenix Kids Club operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and staffing is scheduled according to operational and family needs.

Transportation Drivers may be assigned varying schedules, routes, schools, vehicles, and transportation responsibilities. Availability for early mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, field trips, and other transportation needs may be required depending on the employee’s position and assigned schedule.

Employees are expected to maintain the availability agreed upon at the time of hire and understand that transportation assignments may be adjusted according to the operational needs of Phoenix Kids Club.

Safety Expectations

Child safety is the driver’s highest priority.

Any conduct that places a child at risk—including reckless or distracted driving, failure to properly secure children, leaving a child unattended in a vehicle, unauthorized stops or passengers, failure to complete required vehicle checks, or knowingly violating transportation safety procedures—may result in immediate removal from driving duties and/or termination of employment.

Professional Expectations

Transportation Drivers represent Phoenix Kids Club while operating company vehicles and interacting with the community. Drivers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, patience, good judgment, appropriate communication, and respect at all times.

Employment and continued driving privileges are contingent upon the employee remaining qualified, insurable, and capable of safely performing the essential functions of the position.
