Small Engine Mechanic
Cape Fear Outdoor Equipment is an outdoor power equipment dealership
representing STIHL, SCAG, Bobcat, and Husqvarna. We are looking for a skilled and
dependable Small Engine Mechanic to join our service department.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining
small engines and outdoor power equipment. This position is responsible for servicing
equipment for both residential and commercial customers and requires strong
mechanical, diagnostic, and customer service skills.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose, service, and repair a variety of outdoor power equipment, including 2-stroke and 4- stroke engines.
- Perform routine maintenance, scheduled services, and preventative maintenance.
- Perform major engine repairs, component replacement, and electrical motor repairs.
- Use manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools, testing equipment, service information, and technical manuals.
- Troubleshoot electrical systems and read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Read and interpret Illustrated Parts Lists, Workshop Manuals, and other technical documentation.
- Accurately prepare and communicate repair estimates and quotes to commercial and residential customers.
- Maintain accurate records of parts, labor, repairs, and services using company software.
- Properly document equipment condition, recommended repairs, and completed work.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety policies and manufacturer service procedures.
- Stay current on new equipment, technology, diagnostic procedures, and manufacturer training.
- Work cooperatively with other technicians, parts personnel, sales staff, and management.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on mechanical experience, formal technical training, or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills.
- Experience working on 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines preferred.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, fuel, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to read and understand electrical diagrams, Illustrated Parts Lists, Workshop Manuals, and technical service information.
- Must have the necessary hand tools and specialty tools required to safely and correctly perform repairs.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn and use service and dealership software.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document repairs.
- Professional attitude with good communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Willingness to participate in manufacturer training and continuing education.
Preferred Experience
Experience with outdoor power equipment such as:
- Zero-turn and commercial mowers
- Walk-behind and push mowers
- Chainsaws
- Trimmers and brushcutters
- Blowers
- Tillers and other lawn and garden equipment
- Commercial landscaping equipment
- Hydraulic systems and commercial equipment
- Experience with STIHL, SCAG, Bobcat, and/or Husqvarna equipment is a plus, but not required.
