- 5+ years of operations leadership experience, ideally in a small manufacturing, medical device, scientific, or research products company
- Experience creating, documenting, and implementing SOPs
- Experience using ERP systems; Microsoft Business Central is a plus
FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a Director of Operations to own the day-to-day operational health of a small research manufacturing environment. This hands-on leadership role will bring structure, consistency, and accountability across production, shipping, receiving, facilities, administration, HR support, and process improvement. The ideal candidate will be comfortable setting strategy, creating SOPs, working directly with teams on the floor, supporting ERP-driven operations, and rolling up their sleeves to solve daily business challenges.
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Overseeing daily operations across production, shipping, receiving, facilities, and administrative functions
- Ensuring production areas have the resources, information, and support needed to meet daily goals
- Coordinating cross-functionally with Product Development, Sales, Finance, and other departments to keep production and fulfillment on schedule
- Monitoring operational metrics such as on-time delivery, inventory accuracy, and production throughput
- Driving corrective action when operational issues arise
- Managing vendor and facility relationships, including service contracts, equipment maintenance, and supply chain coordination
- Supporting inventory control and maintaining accurate operational data in the ERP system
- Using Microsoft Business Central or other ERP systems to support assemblies, inventory, production, and operational workflows
- Designing, documenting, and implementing SOPs across manufacturing, shipping, quality, and administrative functions
- Establishing a framework for maintaining, version-controlling, and training staff on SOPs as the company grows
- Identifying process gaps and inefficiencies
- Leading continuous improvement initiatives across departments
- Partnering with leadership to ensure SOPs support quality standards and applicable customer or regulatory requirements
- Managing and supporting daily HR-related activities, including recruiting, onboarding, benefits administration, payroll coordination, and employee records
- Serving as a point of contact for employee relations issues, performance management, mid-year and year-end reviews, and policy questions
- Supporting employee conversations, documentation, and performance-related follow-up as needed
- Ensuring compliance with California and federal employment law
- Keeping employee handbook and policies current
- Supporting workplace culture initiatives, professional development planning, and employee engagement
- Working closely with executive leadership, sales, product development, production, customer service, and finance teams
- Overseeing and supporting a small team across production, operations, customer service, and related functions
- Helping ensure purchase orders and customer needs are turned around quickly and accurately
- Supporting facilities needs and ensuring daily workplace operations run smoothly
- Performing other duties as needed in a small-company, hands-on leadership environment
The selected candidate will also possess:
- 5+ years of operations leadership experience required
- Experience in a small manufacturing, medical device, scientific products, research products, or similar environment strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience working in a small-company environment required
- Proven experience creating, documenting, and implementing SOPs and process documentation
- Experience with ERP systems required
- Microsoft Business Central experience strongly preferred
- Experience with QuickBooks or Microsoft Dynamics preferred
- Understanding of assemblies, inventory, production flow, and operational workflows
- Strong working knowledge of California employment law and HR compliance requirements preferred
- Ability to support HR conversations, employee relations, documentation, and performance management
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Operations Management, or a related field preferred
- SHRM or PHR certification a plus
- Excellent organizational and cross-functional communication skills
- Ability to work closely with executive leadership
- Ability to lead, support, and motivate a small team
- Ability to stay calm, resourceful, and solutions-focused in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to wear multiple hats and support daily operational needs
- Hands-on, proactive mindset with willingness to roll up sleeves
- Strong problem-solving, follow-through, and process improvement skills
- Ability to work 100% onsite in San Diego, CA
- Ability to work a flexible schedule between approximately 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM as business needs require
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move throughout the workday, including time in office, production, shipping, receiving, and facilities areas
- Ability to communicate by phone, email, video meeting, and in person throughout the workday
- Ability to review SOPs, ERP data, operational reports, HR documentation, production information, and computer screens for extended periods
- Ability to use hands and fingers for typing, documentation, data entry, filing, and standard office tasks
- Ability to occasionally bend, reach, lift, carry, or move standard office, production, or operational materials as needed
- Ability to work in a manufacturing or production environment while following applicable safety procedures
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment as needed for production or facility areas
Salary Range: $115,000 to $130,000/year + discretionary annual bonus potential
