Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking Plant Operators to support the daily operation, monitoring, maintenance, and testing of a water/wastewater treatment facility. The role involves operating treatment equipment, collecting and analyzing samples, performing preventive maintenance, and making operational adjustments to ensure safe and efficient plant performance.
Trainee candidates with strong potential may also be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate water/wastewater treatment systems to control the flow and processing of water, sludge, and effluent.
- Monitor gauges, meters, control panels, and operating conditions.
- Operate valves and gates manually or remotely.
- Start and stop pumps, engines, and generators to control treatment processes.
- Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests and analyses.
- Maintain accurate shift logs, meter readings, and operating records.
- Perform preventive maintenance, general repairs, and routine custodial duties.
- Identify changes in operating conditions and take appropriate corrective action.
- Make operational decisions when supervisory personnel are unavailable.
- Report equipment issues, abnormal conditions, and other concerns as required.
- Follow all safety procedures and established operating instructions.
- Work cooperatively with team members and other personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Class C Florida Wastewater License or ability to obtain certification through reciprocity.
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of water/wastewater treatment plant operating experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license.
- Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment operations, pumps, motors, valves, and treatment equipment.
- Understanding of basic bacteriological and chemical wastewater testing.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently when required.
Preferred Experience
- Water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Industrial wastewater treatment.
- Preventive maintenance and equipment troubleshooting.
- Operation of pumps, motors, valves, gates, and generators.
- Laboratory sampling and testing.
- Safe work practices in industrial treatment environments.
Physical & Working Conditions
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Exposure may include loud machinery, high-pressure systems, electrical equipment, confined spaces, heights/depths, fumes, dust, gases, pathogens, and chemicals.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, reach, and perform repetitive movements.
- Ability to climb and descend stairs throughout an 8-hour shift.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from floor level to waist height.
- Ability to operate equipment and perform hands-on maintenance tasks.
- Must be able to wear and properly use required safety equipment.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a licensed or license-eligible wastewater operator with hands-on treatment plant experience, strong mechanical aptitude, attention to safety, and the ability to monitor equipment, perform testing, troubleshoot issues, and maintain reliable plant operations.
